Default d16z6 in ej8?

Picked up a spare motor that I can slowly build on the side over time for boost. So I picked up a d16z6 but im wondering since its obd1 could I just swap the y8 head onto the z6 block? and keep the car obd2?

Im just worried about emissions is all.. they pretty much just plug into my car and check for any codes or what not. Live in IL

would i need a new ecu and a harness to go with it even if i swap the y8 head over?

No. Can't really tune OBD2. I would leave it as is since the P28 is the ECU you will need to tune with anyway.

so then there is no way i can put a z6 in my 96 ex and pass emissions then? thought i would just be able to switch stuff from my y8 over but i read that it wouldnt pass emissions because of a missing sensor or some ****.

yes you can put a z6 in a 96 im currently doing it at the moment and passed for emissions. you will need to use the lower timing gear/oil pump, crank sensor, pick up,and oil pan from your y8 to make this work. since the y8 ecu will be looking for a knock sensor u can either swap the heads or make a bracket to mount it to so it sees vibration from the motor. just u wont use no parts from the z6 but the block and head( if you choose to use it) the y8 dizzy however will only have the top bolt will line up unless u swap the internals and plug from the y8 dizzy into a z6 dizzy. one bolt works fine the slot may need reamed out alil but works perfectly fine and will not go anywhere. or u can spend 30 bucks on a conversion harness for obd2-obd1 dizzy. reuse your intake manifold from the y8,alternator,water pump...etc...i usally use a dx ecu so i dont have to worry about vtec and knock sensor. i just convert my IACV from 2-3wire when going through emissions using a p2e ecu.

yeah for illinois if your car is 96 and newer you have to goto emissions and they only scan your computer, no sniffer or anything, so if you have a check engine light you fail.

If you run obd1 and a p28 you shouldn't have a cel, but I wonder what the emissions place would say if you pulled up without obd2

From my understanding, it'd be an automatic fail. Because your car is running on items older than the model year of the car.

thats pretty much what I figured.. I went for an eg just because I knew I wouldnt have to goto emissions. Back when I had my eclipse I moved to my gfs house since they dont have to do emissions in her town because its so small.

that's only in strict states like CA... here in Delaware it doesn't matter and many other states...if u do the swap as i said and swap the parts i listed you will be fine and be able to run obd2 and obd1 ecu with a jumper when ur done emissions..
