Default 96 Civic Temp Guage problem.

My Civic Coolant guage was working then would not work intermittantly. I figured it was the sending unit. I sprayed the connections with sensor cleaner, plugged it in and now it doesnt work at all.Went to Autozone and got a "sending unit" and a "switch" so the guy said.I put the new "sending unit" in and the guage would read nothing then spike all the way hot. The guage would bounce back and forth. In the Haynes manual it said the sending unit was "the one with the single wire". The "sending unit" I put in, below and slightly to the right of the distributor had two wires on it. I dont see where another sending unit might go. The "switch" the gave me looks way small compared to the "sending unit" or the ECT up on the thermostat housing. I'm pretty damn good mechanically and electrically but this one has me stumped. Basically I'm screaming to you guys for help!!!!!! I drive 60 miles one way to work. The Civic is home and my pickup is drinking the gas.LOL Thanks for your input guys!
