s2000 transmission
An intelligent person would know that you are going to have to pull the transmission, tear it apart. pull out the bad gear along with any other parts that may also be bad including syncros etc. Clean the entire transmission. Replace the damaged parts put it back together, put it back in the car, fill it with fluids and drive.
If you have never rebuilt a transmission then you better grab a book and start reading.
As far as which is cheaper...call a shop ask how much it would cost to rebuild...or price all of the parts that you "think" you might need and then compare that to a used transmission you find at a junk yard.
No one can tell you how much its going to cost to rebuild because they have no idea what all is wrong with it. Your description "bad 5th gear" is **** poor.
Have a good day.
