Icon2 Garrett turbo size question for more hp

Hi,

Just wondering, what hp / psi a Garrett T04B - 50 Trim / AR .63 can produce at max. without destroying the turbo?
It is also oil and water cooled if that makes any difference...

425whp at its absolute safe maximum. this is at about 20-24psi. water cooling only helps the turbocharger keep from hot oil from coking on the turbine shaft causing damage. It will not assist in "spool" or any other benefits.

As a matter of principle, it is never a good idea to run a turbocharger past its maximum safe efficiency, so if you want more power than that, step up past the 50,57/60 trim series into something over 50lbs/min

Thanks for your input Shodan - I think we will shoot for the safe maximum of the turbo, on the dyno and when I can, I will upgrade to a bigger turbo

400whp is about the safe maximum I would do for that size turbocharger.

I been thinking about something so now I am kinda confused about the Whp rating on the turbo - does it mean that the turbo by itself can produce a max. of 400Whp safely? So generally speaking does it mean I would add whatever whp the car makes without boost to this number??

Well once you reach the limit of the turbo it just becomes a hair dryer increasing the risk for detonation. A standard garrett turbo like that also doesnt have the kind of thrust bearing to take that kind of beating all the time (correct me if Im wrong)

Well I guess I will see how I like this setup once we get it on the dyno, etc. Maybe then decide if I want something bigger like a Garrett GT35R or Precision SC61...

No its not.

It would support 400whp TOTAL. Not in addition to what you have before.

The rough calculation that most of the turbo manufacturers use is something like 10lb/min = 100hp worth of air.

So if a turbo can supply 40lb/min of air, it can support approximately 400hp worth of airflow TOTAL to the engine. The engine can only breathe what the turbo supplies.
