Is the b18a1 and b18b1 the same bottom end?
I just cracked a cylinder wall on my boosted 94 civic lsvtec. It had a b18a1 block in it. My question is can i use a b18b1 block to replace it without having to get a tune. Or is it better for me to just find a b18a1? Thanks
From what I understand, they are slightly different engines. I believe the B18B has a few more horses stock due to some differences in the head. So, to answer the question, the blocks should be the same.

The extra 10hp comes from the intake manifold design and the ecu tuning like i stated in a previous post. The heads are identical, the cams are the same (big honda myth that a1/b1 cams are different), look up the part numbers for gods sake if you don't wanna listen/believe me. I have personally seen b18a/b and auto vs manual cams mic'd, they all came back with the same specs....(not trying to be a dick to the above poster BTW)
If you get a b18b1, you just take your distributor, injectors, alternator, wiring and swap them to the b1 and call it a day lol.
I'll wait for the "well my buddy says, or the I put a set of b1 cams in and picked up 20 horse" comments to arrive. Odds are if you see hp gains from swapping to b1 cams from a1 cams, its due to less mileage and wear on the "newer" cams.

No problem. Thanks for clarifying. I just remember reading something about how one had more power than the other, so there had to be SOMETHING that was different between the two. Even if the difference is a bolt on, it's still something.
Thanks for clarifying though! This might help someone pic up a few horses if they're using a B18A mani and come across a B18B for cheap.

yeah my dad is actually trying to source a b1 manifold for his b20 powered crx. He has an a1 manifold, but along with picking up some power it helps clean up the bay since the b1 manifold doesn't have all those damn vaccum lines.
They both have 9.2:1 c/r but for some reason the pistons are labled differently.
