Hi, I've just bought an '03 Civic and have learned that the power steering on this car is electric, not hydraulic as on previous cars that I've owned. However, I suspect there may be a problem with either the tracking or with the power steering sensor as the steering feels quite stiff and 'notchy'. It's not so noticeable at low speeds, but at motorway speed, or even 40mph upwards, the steering has a noticeably 'notchy' feel to it. I understand that the way this system operates is that a sensor detects a change in direction from the steering wheel and then operates the power steering assist motor, but it seems like there is a considerable lag before this kicks in. It feels quite stiff to turn the steering wheel for a couple of degrees or so, almost like no power steering at all, then all of a sudden it kicks in and the steering moves more freely.
I've checked the tyre pressures and they are both the same at 32psi. As I see it, the possibilities that leaves me with are: tracking needing adjusting; power steering sensor circuit not operating correctly; a badly worn steering rack, but given the symptoms and what I know of electronic servo systems, sensor circuit malfunction is top of my list of suspects.
It's going back to the dealer to get it fixed, whatever the cause, but I like to know exactly what I'm dealing with so I don't get fobbed off or ripped off. I would prefer to take it to a Honda workshop and have it checked, but my warranty with the dealer that I bought it from means that I have to take it back there if any faults are found.
Someone must have had this problem before, if so, what was the outcome?
