Icon2 transmission problem

ok so my question is... would it be better to rebuild my tranny or just go get a rebuilt one? i have a 1992 4door Accord with auto trans and i was driving today and it was fine then all of a sudden it jumped out of gear like it went into neutral and jumped back into gear did that for a while and now it doesnt pull very much taking off and wont change gears at all.....second question is would that just be the bands or could it be a sensor or what?.... and the reason i have an auto trans is cause the soon to be wife cant drive a manual and i dont have the patients to teach her

The auto trans in a Honda is a constant mesh configuration just like the manual. It uses clutch packs instead of synchronizers and shift sleeves. The clutch packs are controlled by a complex array of check valves, pressure/spring valves and a few electronic solenoids.

If you are lucky, you can replace a faulty shift solenoid pack. It is external and not that expensive. However, few are that lucky. Most likely you need to replace/rebuild the transmission as you suspect.

You may find a remanufactured transmission if you are lucky. You can try your luck with a junkyard trans ( don't buy one that doesn't have a warranty ) or you can have a shop or yourself rebuild the current trans.

Rebuilding isn't particularly difficult. It is a pain in the *** due to all the small parts. Plus, you don't know exactly what went wrong and what to look for when the trans is apart.
