Default Please Help, 96-00 civic auto trans Gurus!

My sister has a 96 4dr civic dx. The auto trans is about to go. Can I replace her trans with any auto trans from a 96-00 civic?

If so is it a straight swap or would I have to buy some parts to make it work?

If not then what trans codes will be straight swaps?

Thanks in advance for all your help.

You will need to use a transmission for a 1996-2000 LX or DX model. The 4-6 VIN will be "EJ6". If you use an EX from an EJ8 it will have an improper speed signal and kick a code. The speed sensor runs off of the mainshaft 3rd gear so the different ratio will read wrong. If you are interested in a price on a remanufactured transmission send me a PM.

How can you determine if the trans is from an ex, lx, and dx?
I found these codes, do they have anything to do with the trim level?

A4RA (96-97)
AB4RA (97-00)
M4RA (97-98)
S4RA (00)

PS - PM sent

The transmission ID code will not tell you if it is an EX or LX model. You will need to check by the VIN# to know for sure.

Thanks for confirming that for me. I swapped an auto Y8 tranny into mom's Y7 hatch last year when the transmission went bad, and yes it has been throwing a mainshaft sensor code ever since (intermittently though) Sucks because it otherwise works great.

Funny you posted in here because your post in the thread below is one of the reasons why I started my thread.
