Counter shaft snap ring bearing question...
s40 d-series tranny:
Pretty easy Question i think: Counter shaft snap ring bearing, If it has lots of wiggle and play, its bad correct? the same with the needle bearings - i havent thouroughly inspected all the bearing yet tho- how do i know if i should replace other bearings while im in there?
I am in the process of switching out the ISB, first time, and the snap ring counter shaft bearing has a ridiculous amount of play. Change it right?
Stopped after i got the case seperated last night.
thanks in advance. first post
although i search here freq.

Any ball bearing should have minimal to no play. The larger input shaft bearing has some due to its design, but the countershaft snap-ring bearing should be very firm. So yours is bad. The CS needle bearing in the case has some play with each needle/roller, but it firms up once the countershaft is in place.
so i can probly skip switching the needle bearing that sits right behind the snap ring CS bearing? cool
any quick tips on making the snap ring swap go quickly? the pdf manual shows locking the counter shaft down between wood block on a vice, unscrew. is the bearing pretty tuf to pull off once i get the bolt off? i ve got a bearing puller, not sure if its puller arm tabs will fit yet.
thanks honda bull for the reply!

You can't get a 3-arm puller under it. You can get the puller under the 4th gear and pull 4th, 5th, and both CS bearings off. Then just tap them back on with a proper-sized pipe and hammer.
Sometimes, you can tap the countershaft down on a block of wood, and have the entire gear stack slide off - others it is pretty tight. But it's definitely something you can do at home no problem.

Honda Bull, can i get away with reusing the flange nut on the counter shaft? or replace as well?
and would you do you do any tolerance checks if you were in my senario?
thanks for the help again.

Protip: Wear work gloves if you do it that way or wrap the gearstack with a rag so you don't cut or pinch your fingers.
94eg8, do you reuse the flange ***nut? is this safe. fairly stock motor if thats relevant.

Oh, btw, replace the 3 aluminum crush washers for the detent spring bolts with new ones or you're potentially going to have shifting problems.
Reuse the nut or get a new one. Torque to recommended setting and stake the nut.
Measure anything out you wish to. Purchase a Helms factory service manual for your application to get all info you need for that.
