Icon2 no engine light at all in my 96 ek cpe

i have no engine light at all in my 96 civic. nothing when key is turned from off to on, and it does not work when i bridge the blue connector under pass compartment. i checked and replaced bulb and socket. there good. i do get power to both sides of the socket on cluster but i guess its not grounding out when its suppose to. anyone have any ideas or electrical diagrams?

The CEL bulb socket should only have voltage on one side.

right, but when key is on there is voltage on both sides. i think i just need to find a wire diagram and go from there..

The CEL gets voltage from fuse 25 on the Yel wire at the rear of the cluster and grounds on the ECU via the Grn/Orn wire at the rear of the cluster.

Most likely there's a short in the cluster or the ECU is bad.

ok yea i got power at the yellow wire and the grn/orn right now. i will follow the grn/orn and go from there. just wasnt sure what color wire had to b grounded. i know there are wires cut and spliced at ecu so i may have a prob there too and i already had 3 diff ecus in there and cel never worked. thank u

If you unplug the cluster connector that has the Grn/Orn wire and the wire no longer has voltage, then the voltage is likely due to a short in the cluster (=bad cluster).

ok tried another cluster today and still have no engine light. the car runs fine but im getting it tuned this week and need my light to work. the new cluster still gets voltage on both sides of socket- yellow and grn/org wire when keys is on. when i unplug that connecter the yellow wire has voltage and grn/org has notthing. if i ground that grn/org at the ecu i still get no light but if i ground the grn/org wire at the cluster conn i get a engine light. i checked connecter at cluster and its clean no wires touching. im lost need help. lol thanks.. y am i getting power at grn/org wire? is there anyway around this? i do get a oil pressure light.

Does the fuel pump prime for 2 seconds when the key is turned from OFF to ON(II)?

With the cluster plugged in, what voltage to body ground do you measure on the Yel wire versus Grn/Orn wire?

With the cluster unplugged, what resistance do you measure on the Grn/Orn wire with the key OFF? How does the resistance change when the key is turned from OFF to ON(II). For the latter test, watch the resistance reading for at least 5 seconds.

Someone painted my light black with a sharpie. Apparently that was not enough for them so they put black tape over the inside and covered the bulb so no light would get out. Pulled the tape, used alcohol on a swab to remove the sharpie, and then I had my check engine light working again, along with several codes to be fixed. I guess it was cheaper to cover the light than to fix the problems.

This was my experience, you may check that on your.

when i turn key onII the fuel pump runs constant. i also just noticed i have a blue wire that runs from my fuel pump to fuse 18 and if i pull that fuse the fuel pump quits. would that have anything to do with my ses light not working?

i will get my meter tomorrow and measure the voltage and reisistance.

This is most certainly related to your CEL problem. A previous owner has bypassed the main relay. This should not be done because it makes your car unsafe to drive. Remove the blue wire. The main relay was bypassed probably because the main relay, ECU, or wires that run between them are bad. My guess is that the ECU is bad, though don't replace it without testing the main relay and its wires first.

ok yea that makes sense because i had this car for 3yrs and the ses light never worked, and this blue wire must have been there to because i would not rig it up like this. haha.. i really appricate ur help and ur quick responses. i will look at it more tomorrow and let u know how i make out. hope its just the main relay. thank u

how would this make my ses light not work? does the main relay connect into the ses light?
