Buying factory Acura In-dash CD player for $40, worth it? Quality?? HELP
Hey guys I have a 95 GSR and am buying a 00 GSR in-dash factory head unit CD player. Is this worth it? I'm not a sound nut, I just wanna be able to play CD's in my car.
How is the sound Quality from the factory CD player head unit?

Definitely worth it for $40. You won't find a comparable aftermarket unit for anywhere close to that price. You can even add a 6-disc changer (Alpine) for close to $250 to the factory radio. Your total cost would be just under $300 - the price you'd probably pay for a good aftermarket unit.
The price is nice but you might want to check the wire harness on the back of the deck, it could be same or different from your year GSR. If it's the same, then it will be cool. If it's different, good luck trying to find one because the wire harness is attached to the car. Acura sell the wire harness for like $300.
Yeah, I installed the CD player into my car and it doesnt work. The radio functions, but the CD's dont work....maybe the harness isnt right? The CD headunit came off a stock 99 GSR. Its in my 95 GSR now. Help guys!!!
There might be something wrong w/the unit. If the radio works, then the CD player should work too. Separate control wires do not exist for radio functions and CD functions. Honda has been using the same wire harness in most of their vehicles (certain Accords and Civics, Integras) since 1987.

As far as sound quality goes, it's pretty good when compared to other STOCK systems. It doesn't have the power of some of the GM Delcos but when attached to amps, the head unit makes a pretty good tuner/cd player. I think the power rating is 20*4 MAX (like 5W RMS).
Also, if the radio works, the CD player should work. They both run from the same +12V power source.

In Alpine's current lineup, the CHM-S620 will work. You'll also need an interface adapter (made by P.I.E or Peripheral) that typically goes for about $20.
Older Alpine changers will work too as long as the model number starts with CHM.

4DRGSR98 is right. I have the S620. Any M-bus (non-ainet) 6 disc Alpine should work, with the appropriate cable. Or, you can switch 2 of the pins and work it that way, but it's kinda ghetto aint it
Yeah there might be something wrong with the CD deck. Definitely check the harness. I post one earlier about Acura/Honda harness. I'm not for certain, but I remember Acura/Honda uses two different harnesses since '86 to present. To find out whether is the deck or the harness, just install it back on that '99 GSR. If it works then order a harness from Acura/Honda. Quality wise, Honda uses different quality decks. Some Acura uses BOSE for their sound system. While the Prelude uses a deck equal to a $200 aftermarket deck...they claim 120 total watts (max ratings of course). CD decks in Civic or Integra should be the lowest quality...somewhere around 4RMS per channel which is good for the stock speakers. $40 is a good price if you ask me.
if the radio plays and the cd dont they you just bought a 40$ am/fm radio. there are no special wires on the harness to make the radio work and not the cd player. sorry, sounds like you got dupped
Sorry, I think you've been screwed. Both should work.
BTW, I sold a factory radio from my 98 GSR for $114 on ebay. So $40 is not bad assuming it all works fine.
Also, they are like 8watts x 4 rms. So that's kinda weak but the quality is better than most aftermarket.
