Default Another "critique my tig welding" thread

Working with a Miller syncrowave 180 sd

This is just some stuff I have done around the machine shop I work at. I took a 3 day class, but some of these were before the class.During the class was the first time I have ever done aluminum and stainless.

I am having a hard time with doing anything other then flat or round parts. I can't really get the hang of doing 90 degree joints/ angles.Any tips on that? I know I need a lot of work and that there are some very talented people on here.Any and all comments are appreciated. I have a small understanding of what I should be doing, but I'm sure I'm missing something.

The best 90 joint I have ever done (just that tiny section)

some mild scrap

some more scrap (This was before the class)

Machine gun riveting fixture I built (you can kind of get a glimpse on how my 90's suck. They were coming out bad so I just kinda piled the weld on there

Second ever aluminum weld

First ss

You just need to practice as much as you can. For T-Joints or fillet welds you need to make sure you maintain the correct arc length and torch angle. The tighter you keep it the better off you will be.

Thanks.....Anyone else? What's a good arc length? I've been trying to get the tungsten 1/8 inch or closer to the material

1/8 is way to far away, try getting it about 1/16th off the work. The tighter arc will concentrate the heat better and produce a nice tight weld.

Some stuff I did today

round tube to some square plate

Best part of it I did

Worst part.. I need to work on how I start and stop

I think these would have been better If I prepared the material better. I wasn't planing on doing any straight beads so I didn't clean it at all

The problem is what you are welding. You are getting undercut on the tubing/plate weld because of all the mill scale on the plate. Tig isn't meant to weld through that stuff. Clean everything you intend to Tig and it will help alot.

This is probably the best 90 I have ever done..I switched to a smaller ceramic cup.I also cleaned and prepped this material better and put a nice chamfur on all the edges

straight joining two parts together.

I think I know what I need to do for the most part.Like you said I just need to practice and work on keeping the torch steady.

Ive been on and off welding SS practicing and i CAN NOT get color to the welds. Its always black. Ive tried more heat, less heat, more gas. Its always black. Your first attempt at SS and its 100 times better than ALL mine put together

I haven't been doing anything special. The only time I had a weld come out blackish was when I forgot to turn the gas on lol.I instantly noticed what was wrong though.

Decided to fab something for my car for welding practice.Made an oil breather tank out of 6061 aluminum 1/8 wall square tube . Overall I'm happy. Any tips or pointers would be nice. I was using 1/16 4043 filler rod, about 135 amps,100% argon #7 cup and 3/32 pure tungsten .

I didn't grind/sand the welds down. The marks you see are from where sanded down the area before I welded.

I think this was my best weld on the whole thing

Just keep practicing man you'll get it. A larger cup and large size gas lens will help with color on stainless once you get the hang of controlling the heat going into the weld a bit better. Hang in their and weld your *** off it will come in time.
