Default Got a little leak...

Hi guys,

I was under my car couple of days ago and noticed some oil dripping from the intermediate shaft. I checked all around and don't see it coming from anywhere above or anything. Is anyone familiar with the intermediate shaft seal going bad?

im pretty sure the intermediat shaft bearing is internally lubricated with grease, no oil, my gues is a leak from the oil sending unit or filter above the bracket, but it looks pretty dry.

Usually when I change my oil, I get lots of run-off from the filter onto the intermediate shaft. Perhaps this is just left-overs from your last oil change.

its deff either coming from pcv black box, and or from the oil cooler if your motor comes with the oem oil cooler, i just went through this for the longest time! i would drip a lil right on the bottom of the half shaft, i thought it was the tranny seal but didnt replace it, but did get the seal though just in case it was that. I found out the pcv box was leaking, the lil o ring that goes on the box that goes into the back of the block, while at it i replaced my oil cooler seal it was old but didnt seam to be the leak, i even changed that o ring on the black box with a oem one not to long ago but either i tore it somehow when i installed the black box again or it just wasnt sealing right, so i had a o ring from a baggie i kept from head gasket sets i had left over from a few motors i built, the o ring was a bit bigger than the oem one, i took off the black box and noticed the new o ring i put on a few weaks back was torn in half, so i used a o ring i had in the baggie just as a temp to drive to the dealer to get a oem o ring. It hasnt leaked since so im gonna say its the black box!.

Your post is impossibly difficult to read without punctuation!

But yes it can come from the black box. I recently had to replace mine because it was leaking from where the two halves of the box are joined. Just keep in mind this is no simple task replacing the whole box with the engine in the car. The fittings #4 in the top must be plugged into the box before installing. You can barely slide the two tubes onto those fittings once in place because of limited space. You will never get the #4 fittings into the box with them already plugged into the two tubes #5 & 7 on the motor.

Also, it must be replaced with a black box from the same motor. The Type R box is different from the GSR and B16 ones even though look identical. I got a B16 for cheap and it cost me a few days because I had to order the Type R one when I realized it won't bolt in.

If your just replacing the large o-ring #11 that pokes into the block, it's an easy job.

Here's a pic to illustrate:

Not really! theres plenty of comas! i just aded a few but seriously you cant read my post you must not know how to read or something or you wanna be a smart ***.. But! im gonna give you credit! cause i never knew the ITR black box was diffrent! i assumed the b series were all the same!, this may explain why i was leaking in my black box, i had a new ITR swap and had to use some things like the black from my gsr motor!

If you do need to replace the box its not as hard as he thinks!, you can just leave the #7 and #5 hoses and just replace the box itself you dont really need to replace those two hoses one goes to the manifold and the other to the block. The one that goes to the block is going to be hard to take out so you can just leave it if it comes down to it. Take off the intake arm to access the area easy.

My #5 and 7 hoses would not come off the block. I had to remove the #4 couplers from them and plug them into the top of the new breather box to install it. Then slide the box up into place and plug those two hoses into the top. Then I had to slide down the hose clamps without the aid of my eyes since space is so limited. It was quite a task.

BTW: I assume you do not have the large intake manifold support bracket shown in lower left corner. If you did, you could not remove the breather box because it holds it in. You have to unbolt that thing and move it out of the way to get access to the box. You also have to remove the header bracket as well (shown in the bottom center of the pic).

BTW: The GSR breather box wouldn't work on this motor since the PCV valve plugs directly into the top of it (unlike the Type R) giving it two different sized holes in the top. If the bolt holes do match up, you would have to re-route your PCV line.
