Rebuilding b16a1......
I'm rebuilding one of my first gen b16a sitting around....what is REQUIRED or reccomended to be replaced? The block and head are totally bare, but have all parts. (The bearings look cool) In other words, what would be included in an overhaul kit for these engines?
headbolts, headgasket, thermostat, oil pan gasket, rear main seal, intake manifold gasket, timing belt, water pump, cam seals, miscellanious hoses and gaskets. The typical common sense stuff, since you say your bearings look okie doke.
That's what I did and then some. Maybe that's why my stupid swap is costing so danged much with OEM parts.

here's what i replace
On a high mileage engine, the following are mandatory:
.main and rod bearings
.thrust bearings
.piston rings
.honing (and if necessary overboring....which requires oversized pistons)
.oil pan gasket
.valve seals
.head bolts (exception being ARP head studs, which are reusable b/c they don't stretch)
.head gasket
.timing belt
.water pump
.accessory belts
.spark plugs
.clutch
.pressure plate
.flywheel pilot bearing
.clutch release bearing
Optional, but highly recommended:
.Flywheel cover main oil seal
.Oil pump main oil seal
.Connecting rod nuts
.Timing belt tensioner
.Valve guides
.Lost motion assemblies
.Oil pickup gasket
Optional:
.Upper radiator hose
.Lower radiator hose
.Main water pipe o-rings
.Camshaft gear-side seals
.Exhaust camshaft distributor-side seal (if it's leaking)
.Rocker arm shaft orifi o-rings (intake / exhaust)
.Crankshaft pulley bolt
.Valve cover gasket
.Main bearing cap bolts
.Connecting rod bolts (if you want to go through the extra work of line boring)
.Deburring and polishing everything....especially the rods
.Shotpeening the rods and crankshaft
.Oil pump
.VTEC solenoid gasket
.Oil squirter bolts (checking the old ones is highly recommended tho)
