Default how to paint a valve cover useing single stage paint

my friends is painting his valve cover and wants to use single stage paint how to you use it and at what do you use in order for the paint not to chip off when it get real hot on the engine since he is using paint and not the high temp colors from the can. and what psi would you use on a gravity gun to do this

You don't need high temp paint for a valve cover. Those high-temp paints from a can are much worse than real automotive paint.

Prep is the same as you would do for anything else; the surface must be CLEAN and sanded/de-glossed.

So after we clean and prep it just paint it and clear it with clear and when it gets hot on the motor it won't chip

Anything will chip if you hit it with a screwdriver.

After I clear it with clear not With a can spray but with my gravity gun will it chip from the heat from the engine

Chipping is caused by poor adhesion due to poor prep work, so if you prep it right it will not chip. Again, engine heat does not seem to affect automotive paint....I did a test spot on my engine block right below the header a few years back and it has been fine.

You also said you were gona shoot it with single stage.... then in another post you mentiond color then clear. Single stage is exactly what it says... the paint dries to a gloss so you dont clear it. Unless you meant base coat/clear coat and not single stage. Your final product will only be as good as the prep work you put into it.

completely agree.. prepping is the most critical part of the paint process
