92-95 Best stock setup for MPG
Im researching to try and figure out what engine and trans combo from 92-95 provided the best MPG.
Im thinking its the 1.5L and a 5 speed but im not sure what that motor is called or what it looks like.
Trying to get a honda commuter, I know most peeps are ripping out these non-vtec and sohc motors.
Where can I find a good price on an engine if i need one?
What cars did the 1.5 and the 5 speed come in stock? Im hoping for a hatchback.

slow is fine! The fiancée is in a 1991 Landcruser right now 4.0L straight six. Gets about 12MPG highway and top speed is around 90MPH.
Ive never been in anything slower that this beast....but it plowed through the 4 feet of snow we got this year like nothing was there

For comparison:
My B18C Type R swapped 94 hatch with intake header and exhaust just managed 33mpg on it's last tank. That's typical for me with freeway cruising at 3500-3750rpm @ 70-75mph. Best I ever managed was 36mpg with this setup, and the worst was 28 with a couple visits to the drag strip. My car is also lowered 2.5+ inches and rolls on sticky 205/40-16 Falken RT615 with 2* of camber front and 1.2* rear. Not exactly optimal for mpg.
It's not so much the motor tranny combo as it is your driving style, vehicle weight and aerodynamics.
Of course a VX in excellent shape is the cream of the mpg crop!

My 92 EH3 Civic Si hatchback with B16A engine and GSR trans, 2.38" 5Zigen exhaust pulled 35.3mpg on the last tank and that's all highway driving ranging from 55-65mph, lowered 1 inch and running on 195/50-15 tires.
So while I'm not getting the 45-50 mpg of the VX, I am aiming my sights at 40mpg
Also had lightweight alloys and was the only USDM 5th gen Civic to come with a front spoiler. A/C and alternator brackets were aluminum vs cast iron for other models. Even the trunk floor was made from coroplast instead of masonite to save weight.
Good deal. I've never seen what the OEM diffuser looks like. Anyways, I'm sure it works better that cutting holes in the rear bumper cover... or at least it looks better.

cx is a beast for mpg's too. any 8v engine is, and theyre much cheaper/more abundant than the z1, not to mention replacement parts are cheaper for the b8 than z1. compare the epa's 39/49 rating of the vx to their 40/47 of the crx hf.
