you will lose compression on the engine.
your best bet is going to be using PMS pistons from a 01-05 civic GX. 25 bucks a piece.
But if there's any power gain, it will be minimal. Not worth all the work just for like 5hp (if that). Your best bet is to get an ex transmission.

if i were you i would just leave it as it is. gas is going to be over 3 bucks a gallon by summer (on the news) and having a vx which gets 40+ combined is just wonderful when you go to the gas station watching people with suv's paying close to a 100 bucks for a tank

yes leave the z1 alone or swap it, best bet is to swap the tranny and leave the motor alone. thats my opinion. why put all the labor and money into something thats going to perform like stock, get worse gas mileage, and cause all kinds of tuning problems, just to have regular vtec???

running a p28 will make you run on 12 valves until the stock z6 vtec engagement (what like 4500 rpm?) Why would you run a p28!!! i mean seriously, the z1 is designed to run lean and get good gas mileage. Either go performance or gas mileage, if you mess with it (like keeping it stock and swapping transmissions) then you just lose gas mileage and gain what could be accomplished by swapping in a non vtec d15.
