Default 1990 Honda Civic 1.5L FI SOHC 4cyl Not getting fuel.

Hello, all. I have a fuel problem that I have been attempting to track down for about a month. Here is a list of the things I have tried so far.

1. I replaced the fuel pump relay which allowed me to start it and drive it close to 9 miles before it died and would not re start.
2. I replaced the fuel pump, but it’s still not getting fuel.
3. If I pour fuel into the carburetor it will start right up, but dies as soon as I press the gas pedal.

I just graduated college and have no money left to take the car to a mechanic; any help would be greatly appreciated.

How is 'parts' the appropriate forum? I'm trying to find a solution to a fuel problem.

First off do the following:

Replace the fuel filter. Probably it is original or at least 10 years old.

Once done, slightly undo the bleeder bolt on the feed side of the filter and crank the car. You should see fuel spray.

If you see fuel, then look at replacing the fuel pressure regulator as chances are that is also partially clogged as well.

Then see if the car starts and keeps running.

Do these first.

Another thing to look at is a bad solder joints on your main relay as well..

What parts forum? I moved your post to the '88 - '91 Civic forum.

Which injection? dpfi or mpfi? Before you throw parts at it check your symptoms... does check engine light go off? 3 clicks from the main relay? as mentioned fuel coming from the filter? Are you sure its a fuel problem are you getting a GOOD spark? If you pour a very little fuel in the throttle body will it run then die? Theres plenty of tests you can do prior to replacing anything!

I forgot my user name and password so was unable to sign on to check responses.

Today I purchased and installed a second new fuel pump. I can hear it engage when I turn the key, so I am certain that it is doing its job. When I pour a little fuel into the throttle body it starts right up and dies after the fuel is used up.

Thank you for responding, SI-r rex racer. I checked both the fuel rail and the pressure regulator, they are good.

So you've checked these things?
Main relay
fuel filter
fuel pressure regulator
fuel pump

and you know the pump is working, since you went out and bought a new one...

Key in ignition, turn to the second spot, hear a whirr, and a click as the check engine light goes out... they are rather loud noises, check for them.

undo the connection between the fuel rail and fuel line, try turning the car over, fuel spray?

we're assuming you're running DPFI btw.

Yes, I replaced the main relay, the fuel filter (on the firewall), the fuel pressure regulator, and the fuel pump, but still no fuel is getting to the engine.

I turned the key and hear the fuel pump, I then turn one more turn, while holding the fuel pump relay, and hear and feel all clicks. I also disconnected the fuel line from the fuel rail and the fuel filter, not at the same time, but no fuel came out either time.

Do you mean dual port fuel injected, if so, I don't think so.

I can hear the fuel pump quite clearly when I turn the key.

I took the fuel rail and fuel pressure regulator off of a friend's 1990 civic, which I know to be good because his car runs great.

I bought this car new, in June 1990, and have never had any problems with it until now. I take it to Honda once a year for tune ups and change the oil every 3,000 miles.

I am a computer technician, so am very familiar with Google search, but this problem is very elusive.

Pop your dizzy off and touch one side of it on ground, turn the shaft over by hand, if you hear the injectors firing, then there is fuel going in your cylinders lol

the idea is to read the thread he linked to, not just the first sentence... you sure you just bought that tank new a year ago?

Really? Why would I read just the first sentence of the thread, do I appear to be that idiotic. Yes, I am quite sure of when I bought my fuel tank.

I should have know when I saw all of the Canadian posters that this wasn't an American friendly forum.

so you've got power going to the pump
but your car is just dying when you hit the gas
that isn't a fuel problem at all
and that's all i'm helping you with
