Default 98 D16Y7 auto non vtec and 92-95 D16Z6 man. vtec...

I have a 98 civic lx with a bad D16Y7 engine (head is still good). I also have a 92-95 civic D16Z6 vtec engine.
can i take the Z6 engine and bolt it right up to the auto trans and of coarse swap the pressure plate, flywheel and clutch. but with that done would i have to take the Y7 head and put it on the other Z6 engine to make it work because its not vtec?

Yes you can take the z6 (or any d series for that matter) and bolt it right up to the automatic trans in your lx. No you would not have to swap heads keep the z6 head on there (you do not have to run vtec now or ever--but nice to do later on as a project-you'll need a p28 ecu for automatics and add wires) and you can put the y7 intake and exhaust bolts right up but I would look forward to change the IM to a y8 (automatic) and the exhaust to a header with a separate cat (correct me if I am wrong but the y7 cat is right up there as part of the exhaust mani)

Automatic P28 wont control a '96 - '00 Civic tranny. either swap in a manual trans or find another Y7 or equivalent if you want to make this easy on yourself.

^true, kinda screwed the pooch on the ecu, meant obd-2a vtec ecu, and also forgot to add that you will have to repin the dizzy and do the ckp trick, I need to go to sleep now obviously

There's a problem with that too. Timing on a Z6 is 16° BTDC Y8 is 12° (you also need to perform the CKF trick and add a knock sensor, but that's stuff is doable, it's pretty hard to work around the timing issue)

or he could just remove the crank sensor from the y7 leave it hangin so it still shows a signal its there and install the z6 the way it is....i've done it...just swap out the dizzy and machine the bolt holes out to position it correctly....sorry forgot to quote 94eg8 and also hondaguy32 never even mentioned a y8 in his equation

also on top of that the y7 is fuel injected so keep the z6 manifold for better flow

It's pretty simple to just tap into the CYP sensor to fool the ECU into thinking the CKF sensor.

You might be able to get away with this, it's a hack job if nothing else

The only way to run a Z6 in a '96 - '00 Civic with an automatic tranny is with a Y8 ECU.

True, but if you run a Y7 ECU (which does have the correct timing) then you'd need to run the Y7 IM and throttlebody or the one from an automatic Y8 or you'll have idle issues.

Actually that's what you're supposed to do, run an automatic Y8 manifold and throttlebody on a Y7 to prevent idle issues (this is assuming you're using a Y7 ECU, if you use an OBD1 ECU or any other ECU that looks for a 2 wire IACV you will have a fluctuating idle)

sorry i left out the key word when i said swap....i meant tranny swap...the car was auto when i did the swap ran fine but when i swapped the tranny the idle surge came

you dont seem to care much about hp gains. make it easy on yourself and just put the y7 intake manifold on the z6. you dont have to worry about connecting vtec, the car will run fine without it. you can keep your stock ecu this way. also, your current header will work on the z6, no need to run out and buy a new one.

If you used a manual Y8 or any OBD1 ECU then yes that would cause an idle surge.

thankyou for your help everyone.
i took apart the whole engine that was in the car originally and found nothing wrong with the block, the valves or cam or anything for that matter. i put it all back together today and cleaned the injectors, spark plugs, and injector tunnels and the engine still won't start. it cranks over, gets compression and sprayes gas but won't fire to start. what could be the problem?
if i take the manual D16 engine i have and swap it with the one i have in there now without swapping the heads so keeping the y7 in there will that work? don't forget that the car engine is a 98 but the swap engine is out of a 92-95 car.
also, would i be able to take the intake from the vtec engine and put it in the 98 car and taking the wire harness for the swap engine and put it in the car to help with the intake of the swap? i'm trying to keep my cost down to ZERO with the exception of gaskets.

thankyou eghatch9295, now will the clutch and flywheel from the z6 come off and be able to put the flywheel and engine plate to flywheel go right on the z6 engine? if not what would i have to do to get it to work and if its alot, the craziest thing to do would be to weld the son of a bitch in there(i'm not that stupid to actually do that). your right also that i'm not looking for horsepower gain at all. i'm trying to get it to run and run for a while as my dd. i paid 800 for the car with near mint interior and exterior. the only thing the car needs is a speed sensor or speedo, windshield, and radiator. so for 800 bucks i couldn't go wrong especially when i have a spare engine and tranny that i was going to build till i got this car.

Default 98 d16y7 auto trans swapped to 92-95 d16z6 manual trans but keeping the auto

what would i have to do besides swap the flywheel, clutch plate from the z6 to put the pressure plate and all that onto the z6. do i have to swap the harnesses or can i put the y7 intake on it and keep the z6 exhaust because of the oil dipstick?
i'm not going for horsepower gains just a daily driver.

flywheel, clutch, pressureplate interchange. the reason you need to reuse your y7 header is because of the cat converter attached to it. basically, youll need to swap over all accessories from the y7 to the z6.

what would i have to do to the vtec solenoid and chamber connecting to the head? just block it and take the vtec off or keep it on as it is and just not hook it up?
