CAI & Hydro Lock?
Hey. I did a search and seriously found nothing on this topic. Maybe I did it wrong?
Anyway. I am just wondering about the threat of having water sucked in through your CAI? Everyone around me that I tell that I'm getting a CAI, they all just laugh and tell me my engine is going to explode. I have seen the AEM Air-Bypass. How well does that work? What have you all done to avoid this disastrious problem?
Thanks Alot.

I have had an AEM CAI for over a year with no bypass valve. Yes it gets wet and makes fucked sounds no and then - but I consider that cleaning it
Seriously though. I've never had a problem. Just don't try and ford any rivers.

Heavy down pour rain, road flooded out, nowhere to go, etc.
I don't recommend the bypass valve, its prone to break pieces end up in your throttle body causing your throttle to get stuck open.

If you get a CAI, just get a bypass valve. They work, and it is cheap insurance

This search took me 2 minutes.
Ive had a CAI since '00, no problems yet. I leave it on through winters here in NY.
As far as the "fixed" bypass valve goes, we got a 93 prelude S in at that dealership that was hydrolocked that had the "fixed" bypass valve. It broke and sucked up water.
Just be smart in the rain and hope you dont get stuck like Steve did. If you are that concerned about hydrolocking make your CAI in two pieces for an easy conversion to a short ram if need be.

Thanks for all of them help.
Sorry about the search thing man. I typed in Hydro Lock and nothing came up for me. Seriously.
And to the guy who has hydro'd his engine twice. Doesn't doing that totally destroy your engine, or are people around me handing me a whole line of bullshit?
Thanks again.

I've had an AEM CAI for 2 years now and I have never had any problems. I bought a bypass valve, though never installed it because it causes a slight loss in power, even though AEM improved the design by adding a plastic ring so that the foam dosn't get sucked into the throtle body, I figured that I'll be fine without it.
Just be aware of what the road is like that your driving on when there is a great deal of rain.

Generally not a problem though, unless you are either missing your fender lining like me, or you drive through 12" of water with the throttle mashed.

rolled aem CAI for 3 years now. never hydrolocked.
