throw out bearing?
i have a 1990 honda civic si with the stock motor the d16a6. my problem is my car makes a noise when my foot is not on the clutch but when my foots on the clutch they noise goes away. ive read on here that its the throw out bearing but people have also said its the input shaft bearing. I just would like a straigh answer of what it is or if its something else?
Essentially, anytime the input shaft is moving, the ISB is spinning. By depressing the clutch pedal, the input shaft is no longer moving and thus load is removed from the bearing. If the throw out bearing were the issue, pressing the clutch pedal would engage the TOB to the moving flywheel/clutch/pressure plate causing the TOB to begin spinning, which would actuate noise. The input shaft bearing is your culprit. But if you are yanking your transmission to replace such, you might as well inspect the clutch & pressure plate, not to mention the TOB as it is an easy replacement while the transmission is off.
The TOB is not adjusted in that particular Honda, Danked, it is simply retained by the ends of a spring. Don't always listen to your parents, they don't always tell the truth... Remember Santa, the Easter Bunny, and the Tooth Fairy? Yeah, I had a vendetta with my parents for several years regarding such. My point is do your own research, derive your own conclusions with supporting evidence and not "X-Y-Z" told me so.
Based on what you have revealed, yes, I indeed believe the ISB to be your issue. But as I stated previously, you will be removing the transmission regardless and thus I highly recommend inspecting all of those particular associated parts for wear.

But thanks! Since all my gears grind, the tranny has to come apart too so i might as well replace everything, 1 time, so i don't have to tear it all apart next month when 1 of them shatter =/
