Can you refurb an exhaust system?
If I can get my hands on a particular eg2 Mugen teardrop exhaust, I may jump on it. My question is this:
Are there businesses that can refurb exhausts? I would want it to look as close to new as possible. The exhaust has some surface rust and a small hole that has worked through. Can it be saved to look fresh again?
Can exhausts be cut open and cleaned up internally some way and then welded back together? I'm sure this is a stupid question but what the hell...
This exhaust as many of you know is pretty rare and hard to find in perfect condition. Does anyone have any info on a company that overhauls exhausts? Thanks

A quick search on Google says there is no such thing. But let me ask you . DO you think the exhaust would be in perfect condition after it gets split apart and welded back together again? Or do you think you would totally destroy any value that it might have had?
1...if you think that Google has the answer for everything, you're sadly mistaken
2...I said as close to new as possible. If there was such a company, I'm sure it would look great.
Your post was useless. But thanks for the bump

So I guess no one can ask a question to get some clarification on what you're trying to accomplish.
Well then start looking in the Yellow Pages. Did you try calling a shop to see if someone actually in the business of exhausts has heard of it? Probably not. I Googled all of Honda-Tech and came up with nothing and Google in general doesn't have any info. And yeah, I can find anything on Google. Post useless? I think This thread is useless.

even if there was a shop that could re-man an exhaust system it would be way cheaper to just buy one and replace it yourself......a re-man would be like putting a band-aid on a bullet wound lol
I think most (if not all of you) are missing the point, that muffler he is possibly getting is next to impossible to get (if at all). So what the OP wants is to refurb that particular exhaust.
I don't even know how this would be a profitable business to get into. Like exhausts are worth that much? Even real bonafide classic cars have replica/replacement exhaust systems. NO one's refurbishing those. So yeah, quoting the OP, this is a stupid question.
ok lol i get it now....make it a little more clear what ur trying to do next time....anyway idk if there is a way of refurb-ing an exhaust system....good luck finding the mugen teardrop
For what you're going to pay for a Mugen system and potentially get it fixed, just get an Apexi WS2 or some other system. Even eBay piping is ok if you get a decent muffler.
The problem with exhausts is the metal is already so thin and they just rust out. You can't weld rust and removing the rust will leave even thinner metal. It's like brake pads. You don't refurb pads, you just buy new when they're shot.

over here in malaysia, opening up an exhaust (at the welds) and a re-fiber job is pretty common....so yeah...its possible to open them up...so you could probably clean them.
as for the exterior look, just need to patch the hole up..sand it down and get rid of the rust... and a quick respray/powder coat and should look good as new.

Who doesn't get it? There is no where that does it. No place offers this as a service. Does anyone even know what would go into refurbishing an exhaust, assuming such a service even existed?

To the people who actually got what I was asking: Thanks, I think I will try and win the Japanese auction. This exhaust is very hard to find and would be going on my 92 jdm eg2 SiR. The amount of money I would have in the exhaust is not the issue...never was. I simply wanted to see if someone had any info on restoring exhausts. I could have sworn that I saw a TV show years ago that refurb'd one. Thanks again!
I did a little quick research and these are like $1-2k for used systems and they're super rare.
Nobody seems to make a replica either.
I supposed if you could remove all the rust in an acid bath or by soda blasting it, fill any holes with new metal and maybe ceramic coat it like you do headers it may make it last longer. It's probably something YOU would have to do yourself though or find a business willing to take it on since most people just have regular off the shelf exhausts that are cheaper to just replace when they rust out.

They don't sound bad. I don't understand the hype over rare JDM parts, but function has always come first for me.

You could probly take it to an exhaust shop or a machine shop and have them weld the holes as far as looking new you probly could use low grit sand paper ans sand it to polish it up some but i think thats about all you can do really.
...you want to put this on your shelf or something?
exhausts are to be USED and put under a car.
so it will just get dirty and old AGAIN. also no one will ever see it save for the 3 inches of muffler.
these places don't exist because its not worth it.
this thread is useless. very. like hey can someone refurb my jdm garbage can?
you have made no real point. besides you wanna be mad JDM...for no preformance reason.
after you find this exhaust go out and build your own 3" and see which one works better.
