Default finally made the swap

after months without a properly working transmission, i finally took my car to a transmission swap and had a guy swap out my old tranny for the used one i bought off someone on craigslist. i also had them change the clutch with a new kit. all that being said, the car runs great... a night and day difference from when i first bought the car. so here's where we run into problems: my speedometer doesn't function and the check engine light is on. i take the car back to the shop and have the guy reconnect the cables on the tranny but now i hear a weird buzzing/clicking coming from the guage cluster. sounds like its coming from behind the speedo. what do you think can be causing this problem? how can i check for CEL codes on my own?

It could affect fuel economy if its throwing your speedo off, making you think youre going fast or slower than your actually going but i dont see a huge problem with it as long as it still works. Try taking the guage cluster out yourself and reconnect where the speed sensor wire plugs into the back of it. if that doesnt work you should probably look for a new guage cluster. as far as code 17, look it up in the search and im sure youll find what youre looking for

that's all good info. the mech that did the job actually gave me the retaining clip that I assume needs to be on the vss. well lets say the vss and/or speedo cable are defective, can I swap it out with another tranny I have in my garage or even the broke one that was originally in my car? although my old tranny was broke the speedo still function.

swap out the vss from the other tranny you don't need to swap out the entire tranny itself...!!!
