Chewed sensor wiring, what does it do?
I just returned from a vacation and when I turned on my 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid, the check engine light came on. It was not on before. The fuel cap is on tight.
Upon closer inspection, I found wiring that had been chewed through under the hood. Can somebody tell me what this wiring is for? Is it safe to drive to the dealer? Can I replace this part myself and how much would it cost?
The car appears to idle fine.
Thanks,
Ted

for your own peace of mind, u could probably go to a parts store closer to u like autozone and get it scanned, then they can tell u if its safe. but a CEL is usually just an alert, doesn't mean ur car is toast, unless its like a oil light or flashing CEL, u should be ok to drive it
Match up colors, solder them and heat shrink to do it right. The dealer will tell you you need a whole new harness and on top of the cost of the harness they will charge you out the *** for labor.

no the dealer will NOT tell you you need a new harness anyone who has dealer experiance in this knows they will REPAIR the harness, in fact honda has a part number for electrical tape that is a rat repelant after the wires are connected and re soldered and heat shrunk the tape goes over it, i have some in my tool box pricey roll of tape but it does work i use it at least once a week. have not had any issues after the fact.
also those are the vtec solenoid wires as stated above yes you can drive it its going to run very sub par though beucase it controls the valve pause on that motor as well but you are most definatly safe to drive.
also hooray for mis information on honda-tech as usual **** if you don't know something for a fact don't answer a question

What's the part number for that tape?? I know the v6's are prone to have the knock sensor wire getting chewed and the updated part is wrapped in the anti-rat tape.
Just an update to close this thread out. I took the Civic into the dealership and they were able to solder the wires back together and clear the codes. So far, it appears to have worked.
Total charges were $130.
Thanks for everyone's input on this.

When I was a technician at Acura we didn't encounter rodent damage very often, just once in awhile. But when we did we'd repair it, or give the customer the option. It depended on how extensive the damage was... if it's just one or two wires (like the OP here), there's no point of replacing the entire harness. But most of the time they were worried about preventing FUTURE rodent damage.
To the OP: Glad it worked out well for you!
