Default Just how does a fuel gauge work?

any electrical circuit designers here?

I am needing to take the 0-100 ohm fuel sender and have it give me a 0-~5v signal for a Neptune input. I would imagine this has been done, but it's hard as hell to search for something so specific.
The wiring diagrams don't show anything but a feeble picture. It looks like a voltage divider, but that doesn't say how the gauge works.
Spooner has a 90 electrical troubleshooter, but the gauges are not in the pack.

edit..

"
The engine coolant temperature gauge has two
intersecting coils wound around a permanent
magnet rotor. Voltage applied to the coils, through
fuse 13, generates a magnetic field. The magnetic
field, controlled by the engine coolant temperature
sending unit, causes the rotor to rotate and the
gauge needle to move. As the resistance in the
sending unit varies, current through the gauge coils
changes, pulling the gauge needle toward the coil
with the stronger magnetic field
"

ok, so it seems like I should just check what the actual voltage is on the sender wire and possibly take a fuel gauge out of a cluster and tuck it away somewhere. T'ing off that wire to where I need the 5v. Ghetto as hell, but probably safer in the long run.
