I'm thinking about using an engine degreaser and washing it down at a local car wash.
I was wondering if this safe. I'm scared that it would somehow create electrical problems or make the engine check light to come on.
I really want to clean my engine, but I don't know how to do it safely. If you've done this before, please share with me how you did it. What is the best product to use? Is it okay to jet spray the water directly onto the engine and other parts? What should I avoid? I think you get the idea....

Same principle.

 

I'd avoid spraying the distributor and if you have an short ram intake avoid spraying the air filter.

simple green is a good product to use to clean your engine.

 

^^ This just to make sure. But I have literally doused all components except the air filter and never had an issue. Wrap both up with a plastic bag if you need to.

 

It's hard to beat simple green and some elbow grease. A few towels and some simple green will go a long way and do a much better job than spraying the engine down. Steam cleaning works well also.

 

Put a plastic bag over the distributor and then go to town.

Use Simple Green & water.

 

GAHHH. Do not put simple green on your engine! It will oxidize your aluminum parts and make it look like white scale is all over your engine.

It's very easy to clean your engine bay:
* Aquire quarters.
* Find self service carwash (The kind with the hose.)
* Open Hood.
* Insert quarters.
* Spray the engine with the soapy solution.
* When you have a minute left, switch to rinse.
* Rinse the engine. NOT TOO CLOSE! Stay 18 - 24 inches away from the engine.
* Wait a few minutes for the water to drip down.
* Close hood.
* Drive away.
