Default Random CAI question

I know that the purpose of a CAI is to get colder air into the engine, resulting in a little more horsepower (if any) and maybe some gas being saved. Now my question is will this work the same as a cold air intake: (random idea exploded inside my head)
I used the OEM air intake hose and flipped it so that it would go down to get colder air. There's a K&N filter inside the housing

The holes I covered with electrical tape (just a quick thought to cover it with). It doesn't hit the axle because I strapped it to the tranny mount with a wire.

Then it ends right behind the wheel without touching the brake hose or the shock absorber or the fork.

Let me know what you guys think, if it works, then I just saved myself about $220 for a AEM street legal CIA (in california)

Other than your filter is going to full of rocks, sand and bugs really fast, not to mention when it rains, try it and let us know how it does

On a stock Y7? Don't even waste your time. The first time you forget and go splashing through a deep puddle of water will be the last.

Interesting idea!

I think it would be fine, other than the fact that your filter will get dirty a little faster, but it takes a few seconds to pull it out and clean it so it's no big deal.

Just don't go through any huge puddles.

I like how it's right next to your brake rotors. Arguably the hottest place on your car.

If I were you I'd just put it back how it was. Points for creativity I guess, but it's not really going to give you any gains.

It only rains about once or twice a year, if that, and the hard rain season is already gone here in cali where I live

Yeah some bug might be a problem every now and then, but rocks I highly doubt it because they would have to travel up and stop by the time they reach the groves on the pipe

No puddles here man, only the occasional car-wash or sprinkler water out on the street/curb

Yep, thats why I didnt even bother looking to buy an actual $220 CAI

But its a couple inches away from the rotors, besides the tires spinning might disperse the hot air, maybe??

Its not hard, I just dont want to spend $220 on something that, with my engine, will give me very little results. Just come up with my own

It's a Y7. You won't see anything from that rigged contraption. Respect your car. Do it right or leave it stock.

Wind from the car traveling at high speeds will do a lot more to guide the hot air surrounding your brakes than the inside of the wheels. There's no fan blades inside the wheels to circulate air.

Either way, I doubt it's much cooler next to your brakes than inside the engine bay.

Reporting back on the DIY CAI:
I feel that it somehow is saving me some gas, cuz the gas needle seems to stay up (more full) longer than before even though it is a y7, also I feel that its a little more responsive because of the cooler air coming into the engine, but I guess I'll never know unless I dyno it wit the stock set up and then with my "DIY cold air intake"
