Default Best degree of advancement for low-mid range power

Hi everyone!

Recently, my distributor took a crap and died. So I installed a new distributor and learned how to adjust the timing. I adjusted the timing to stock 16 degrees BTDC. However, I noticed a huge loss in low-end + mid-range power. My friend who is a master-tech told me that the timing was advanced on the car when I first got it (even before I switched the distributor) and I suspect that I am feeling the effects of returning to stock timing. My question to you all, and hopefully someone on this forum is an experienced tuner, is what is a good degree of advancement on the timing for a stock D16y7?

I use this car for daily driving and don't plan to race it, except to spank my dads slow saturn wagon, and I'd like the best possible low to mid range power/torque. How much should I advance the timing?
