So I recharged the ac, still no cold air. I didn't hear the compressor turn on, the gauge on the recharge kit said I was full with half of a can.

So does that automatically mean I'll need a new compressor? Or should I check for other things wrong? If I do have to go the route of getting a new compressor how much do they generally go for? Can I get one used for cheap? And how hard would they be to install? All help is appreciated.

Was the system empty? How much refrigerant did you add?

If the system was empty, did you fix the leak? Did you evacuate the system and replace the receiver/dryer prior to recharging?

What are the high and low side pressures?

 

The system initially was empty when I first put the gauge on. I don't know what the high pressure is and didn't replace anything as is. How would I go about evacuating the system and identifying the leaks if there is any?

I added about 9 ounces total. It was a 18 ounce can and it took about half of that

 

The fact that the system was empty tells you there is a leak and that air more than likely had entered the system. Air and moisture in air is very bad for an A/C system and is the reason that evacuation is absolutely required prior to adding refrigerant to an empty system.

Have you read the A/C recharging thread in the FAQs sticky? You really need to do this. (edit: I noticed that here I had already directed you to this important thread.)

Now you basically need to recover the refrigerant at a shop, to evacuate the system, and to add new refrigerant containing a leak detecting dye. Read the thread in the FAQs sticky.

Not necessarily. Reading will save you so much time and money.

 

did you jump the low pressure switch? if the compressor doesnt turn on then you cant charge the system. the freon will not go into the system and if you keep trying to fill it up you will most like blow a line due to the pressure. you can unplug the low pressure switch and put a wire in the switch to jump it and the compressor should start turning. the right way to do it is have someone pull vaccum on it.

 

Nah I never tried to jump it. I'm pretty ac retarded to b honest with u. All this is new to me so I'm kinda learning as I go in terms of ac.
