Default EG/LS Swap with random severe steering wheel shake

Just picked up a 92 EG hatch with a b18b1/GSR tranny swapped in. It has some kind of aftermarket engine mounts.

Now when I drive it at highway speeds it will randomly and quite often get a pretty severe shake in the steering wheel and sometimes pull to the right slightly. Its not a vibration and It's not the normal bad alignment or wheel balance shake. It feels like the whole steering column could be moving or something.

I have a feeling it might be something to do with the engine mounts but when it first happened it scared the **** outta me cause it felt like something was about to fall off the car.

Any ideas?

Did you use new or used cv shafts with the swap?

Have you inspected any suspension components?

If it has power steering it could cause the vibration. You can just simply take the power steering out and it wont have too much of a diff.

Wife's car had that. Had the tires rebalanced and replaced one of the struts since it was blown.

Raised the coilovers to max height and the problem pretty much disappeared. Then I lowered it back down about 1/2 inch and it came back so at least one of the front shocks was blown. Also makes sense cause I drove on a perfectly smooth new section of highway yesterday and it road like a dream. So I have some Koni Yellows on order already along with all new ball joints, tie rod ends and various bushings.
