my 98 prelude has a fairly loud ticking noise present all the time but gets really loud when exelerating, heard a sort of shrill sound which diappeared and followed by this ticking noise, runs and starts fine other than the noise, any ideas would be appreciated

Timing belt? Auto tensioner about to fail? When have you done a valve adjustment or timing belt change?

 

Oh god please replace that auto tensioner! If it fails and your timing belt jumps some teeth and bends your valves you will remember this comment!
Convert to auto tensioner, best thing you can do for your engine.
