Default Knocking issue

OK 95 ex has a knock. We checked all bearings, valve lash, torque on the camshaft and crankshaft bolts. Cannot figure out where the knocking is coming from. The funny part about it is that it only knocks when the rpm's are at about 3400 or 4500 and steady. What can the issue be. The sound is louder above engine and towards the front.

Ive seen a few times on this engine, the block cracks between #2 and #3 cylinders, between the sleeves. This caused a knock.

Did you check if the thrust washer rod bearing is there?

Its kind of hard to give a audio clip while I have to drive the car and you really need to have an ear outside to hear it. Sorry.

Nus dogg: What thrust rod bearing are you talking about exactly?

thrust washer is a spacer for the crank, to reduce crank walk. so its only under load you hear it?

yes only at certain rpm's though. Not too low and not too high.

When was the last time a valve adjustment was done? Also have you checked the spark plugs for damage and/or wear?

Aftermarket header? I had a thin walled header that would make a knock/ticking noise in the mid RPM range......

Just throwing a few ideas out there...

I adjusted the valve lash yesterday to make sure and it still happened. The spark plugs are about 3 months old approx. 25oo miles on them. As for the header it is stock but I did get an aftermarket oem downpipe. I took it off about 5 mintues ago and noticed that the flange where it joins to the header, the welds look like their cracked. Could that be the cause? To test if it was cracked I turned the car on and poured water from the hose on to the header and the water just evaporated but when I poured it on the flange area steam would keep blowing.

If you have an exhaust leak close to the manifold/header it can sound like a knock at times.
