Default Trying to figure out if i need a starter or not

I have a 97 ITR (B18C5). when i start my car first thing in the morning it doesnt fire up right away. then sometimes i have to push start it. once it turns on, the rest of the day its fine. the battery is about a month old. i just replaced the alternator 2 weeks ago and that helped but its still having a hard time starting. i let the fuel pump prime then i turn the key and wait. then it starts or on rare occasions (like tonight) it wont start at all even after running fine all day. i just hear a "werring" sound. no clicks. it doesnt crank. the CEL is on too. i am gonna have the code read tomorrow for the CEL, but i dont think that related to why my car wont start. it was having a hard time starting already, hence buying a new battery and alternator.. not sure what more info you guys need. im not a mechanic by no means, so i want to make sure i can get as much info about what to check so i can narrow down WTF is wrong with my car.

that sounds like the starter is on its way out i sounds like its not pushing the gear out onto the flywheel to spin the motor

While holding the key (where it would normally crank to start), have someone tap the starter with a hammer or wrench. If it starts up at that point, then it definitely is the starter. The plunger gets stuck and causes it to not start. If that doesn't change anything, then I'd almost think ignition switch is going out. CEL would definitely be nice to rule out.

check the positive terminal on the starter.. nut for contact might be loose..

i had that happen to mine.. and eventually the pos terminal actually snapped off..

ten bucks says it's the starter crapping out, just wack it with something. My understanding that it's just a bad spot in the armature... it's not a permanant solution of course. But that's how you can rule out your other components.
