Icon6 The best Integra Type R motor.

I would like to know which one is the best between them all ? What are the differences between them all ? From 1996 to 2001. USDM or JDM ? Explain if you can. By the way, I have searched but I did not find what I was looking for. Thanks.

in short virtually none

there was a cam change in 98 on the intake side that had a basically non existant effect on power. something like 3deg on the intake at 1mm

in jdm land the hand ported heads went to cnc in 98 and the 4-1 jdm header from 98+ is the best of the oem manifolds

jdm pistons also had a slightly larger dome raising the compression to 11:1 from 10:6-1

that's it

usdm itr engines are extremely difficult to find unless you either buy a new one or a bare block from someone. very rarely will you see one in good shape for sale

the 96-97 engine usually sells for $2500 shipped and the 98+ around $300-500 more

Do you have the transmission included at 2500 dollars or if it is just the engine ?

well said, you can do like me and ditch the mystery used ITR swaps and buy it all new. I built this one with the exception of ARP head studs. remember the head comes pretty bare brand new its missing the v.c vtec solinoid manifold assembly, the block comes completely assembled. Tranny will cost around $1,200+.

Very impressive. Great way to spend that kind of money. I guess the cheaper route would be to just have an OEM rebuild on the stock motor. I'm glad to know Honda still makes the parts like this.

i spent more than $6,000 on just the motor and trans. and still needed little things... its expensive but if you can assemble a motor and dont want a rebuilt motor its the way yto go!, i hated how every built motor i had burned oil pretty much eventually but this one is great!

rebuilds aren't what they are cracked up to be in a lot of cases. these engines have cylinder liners that shift and mains that can distort. it's really common to do a rebuild and have an oil burner.

personally if you want a DD for mileage i would either go jdm or new

jdm has one advantage in that you get it all

new has an advantage in it being just that, new, that's 150k miles or so you'll personally get

if you do go new. don't sell the fkknifdawing car ! it's going to be a trouble free DD for at least a decade

If you want to get into specifics about the ITR motor, here's a pretty good thread.

ITR's didnt get that upgraded cam till 99-00 RX model
CTR's always had it since being introduced in 97

think 96spec engines were hand assembled opposed to 98spec engines being machine assembled, dont qoute me on that as im not entirely sure bout it, think it was mentioned on Best Motoring comparisment between 96 vs 98 spec

So whats the story? Mine was a bad tune with a SC, too much timing goesBack on topic, I believe a lot of oil burning on a rebuilt motor is improper piston to wall clearance along with bad ring gap.

as far as i know they were all hand assembled. it's the heads that went from being hand blended to cnc'd

the cam upgrade is kind of laughable. there was a minor 3deg@1mm change on the intake cam, but, my guess is honda did it to save money. why grind two cams when one works? they just went with the larger or the two
