Need opinion on modified Civic Purchase
was this the white hatch back on craigslist? he said he had it tagged and inspected for de? if u buy it make sure u ask if it can be inspected and if so what would u need. cuz it would suck to buy a car and then cant get it tagged because of regulations. i dunno about tracking in DE i preffer cecil county,md dragway over delmar,de.
Is there a link to this car? If so, post it. I would try and stay away from cars that has already been built unless you know that the engine builder and that he has a good reputation for building good motors.
I don't think this is a tech matter per se.
Get receipts for everything that was done to make sure this wasn't a junkyard rebuild. Have the shop that did the work checked out as stated above. If you live in a state that has emissions make sure you can get it registered down the road if you make the purchase.
What's the asking price?

Well first things first it's VTEC, not Vtech. That's an electronic company.
So if the owner posted it like that, you may want to be wary of them.
Otherwise you need to be wary of the typically things concerning modified cars:
1) What exactly has been done (you have a list, now verify it)
2) Miles on rebuild (check)
3) Verify as MUCH as you can as far as who built it, tuned it, and who did the machining (receipts are a good start)
4) Feel out current owner (do they look like they beat the s#@t out of it, etc.)
5) Maintenance record
You get the idea. The build sounds solid, if everything on there is true and it was done properly. As you might know, you have to be a little more wary with LS/VTEC builds. If they are built correctly though, they can have a lot of miles put on them. Btw, did they say who tuned it or what the details are with the ECU?
As far as value... Idk where you live, but around here with its interior/exterior condition (good) and it being a nice N/A motor it could go for as high as 6000 and as low as 4000. So it sounds like his price is at least fair (assuming no problems). Obviously prices around the country vary but that's around the St. Louis region.

Well im sure the owner didnt build it to get to the store faster. LS/VTEC like said above if not done right or done cheap can look nice run ok for a short time. But can take a dump on you at anytime. I would ask him what his goal was with the car. Also this thread is fail with out a link or pic of the car. A good looking car to you can be a pos to a person who know's a thing or two.

If the guy has receipts for labor done on the rebuild, I'd say it's pretty trustworthy.
Well i would still be very cautious i once bought a car with paper work. But the paper work was for a diff motor.they where both gsr motor's but the paper work was for a motor his buddy built in a car that was t boned.
If the owner has the receipts for the build I would have possibly considered it until I read that it has a 2000 front end on a 97, but that is just me. It sounds clean and all, but I am not about buying someone else's project. You can find a stock 96-00 hatch/coupe or even a shell and make the car yours. If you have had modified cars in the past I would assume you take pride in building something that is yours and not someone else's idea.
