A belt sander would go straight to bare metal in seconds lol

It will be awesome if someone made a FAQ or DIY thread about prepping your car for painting. Whether it be fore a simple repaint to complete repaint by sanding down to the metal.

http://www.matcotools.com/Catalog/to...select=&page=2

Look at part number- MT4151 (Random Orbital Sander)

This is the best "all around" sander ive found. Wont do everything you need, but it will do most. Its not as destructive as a DA sander which is why i like using it.

Why? Is the paint damaged? Unless the current coating is failing or unless you know for a fact that the previous job was done horribly then just leave it alone and prep it normally. The only other reason to strip all of the paint off of a surface is because it has a ton of corrosion (rust), if it requires a ton of body work or if you're doing a high end show finish that you want to start fresh with.

Have the shop do it since they have the proper tools and experience. If you're trying to save money by doing it yourself, you're going about it all wrong. A DA sander costs anywhere from $100-200. You'll go through a shitload of 6" sandpaper on the DA removing the paint and even if you're just prepping normally you can expect to use quite a bit. That's from $40-ish (if you just prep the surface normally) to $100+ if you try to mechanically strip it just on sandpaper because you can never just buy a few sheets... any different grits you need you'll have to buy a whole box.

Unless you already have the equipment and the materials or unless you're genuinely interested in tackling the project yourself and are willing to spend a good chunk of momney to get started and do it right it's far better to just let the shop do their thing.
