Help! Coolant Leak from block of D16Y5?!
Hi, new to honda-tech was told this was one of the best place for help when it comes to hondas so i decided to make an account and see if you guys can help me out here. i have recently bought a 94 eg hatch with a d16y5 vtec-e swap and was dumped on maxed out blox coilovers. last night i was going down a dark road and smacked the motor im guessing and when i got home i noticed there was a leak. it was pouring down so i decided to wait til the next day. this morning i jacked up the car to see what it was and it wasn’t leaking oil and all the oil still there when i checked the dipstick, coolant was low though and the overflow tank was also low but wasn’t leaking at the time, but when i turn on the car and coolant starts circulating i noticed there’s a leak coming from the block. its coming from the part next to the alternator and it drips down between the oil pan and the crank pulley? what could be causing the leak, my worst fear at the moment is cracking the block front the hit?
thanks h-t!

Sounds like your water pump failed. Post some clear pictures of locations where you see coolant leaking. If the pump is bad, as seems likely, then you need to remove the crank pulley to replace it. May as well do a timing belt job while the crank pulley is off.
Yep. Also, go to your local honda dealer (or hondaautomotiveparts.com, bkhondaparts.com) and buy a genuine honda water pump, I haven't seen an aftermarket water pump yet that was worth using. As far as the belt goes you can buy a Gates belt at any parts store (gates makes timing belts for honda btw)
What struck your engine and where did it hit? While you have the front end on stands trying to figure that out, also post some clear pictures of areas of the engine where you have seen coolant leaking.
Probably didn't. More likely just a coincidence. Sometimes the seal around the shaft goes bad and it'll start leaking out the weep hole (you'll see it leaking around the alternator) sometimes the seal between the pump and block goes bad (you'll typically see coolant around the bottom of the lower timing belt cover and where the oil pan meets the block) sometimes both will be leaking.

I actually don’t have a good enough camera to take decent pictures right now because of the darkness out and the pouring down rain coming down..
but I will first thing tomorrow morning!

so today i jacked up the car and noticed coolant was leaking out of a hole. heres the pictures i took of it and the leaking hole is marked with the red. whats the hole for and is there something that suppose to be there? thanks h-t!

I'm still thinking water pump, but I'm not exactly sure what I'm looking at. It's seems to be an area below the alternator and behind the crank pulley, suggesting the lower timing belt cover. Can you pan the camera back and take more pictures that give a better sense of the leak location?
Did you find any damage from something striking the engine?
In the picture below, do you see the area where coolant is leaking?

Look at the picture below

I'm in the same boat as Ron, I can't tell just exactly what it is i'm looking at, again though it almost has to be water pump. If your camera has a macro setting (the flower) take some pics on that setting.
It's not shown in the picture it's in the back of the motor and I have an iPhone and don't really have picture taking options.. :/
its like a hole in the block and a 10mm bolt on the left side of the hole leaking and im not completely sure if its the one i circled in the picture but should be close and looks kind pretty much like that hole...
it looked like i smacked the oil pan right next to the drain bolt..and can you go more in depth with what that hole is and why my water pump is toast? thanks for all the help!
That's the bleed hole for the water pump. When the pump fails or leaks, the bleed hole diverts the coolant away from the timing belt. When coolant flows from the bleed hole, the water pump has failed.
