i have a 96 S80 tranny that i took out of my car because i had a bad 4th gear synchro. the transmission was abused by the previous owner so i deciced to put in a whole different gear set a good friend of mine had that was in MUCH better shape than mine. i now have ITR main and countershafts with all the gears, new synchrotech synchros and i replaced the whole shifter mechanism i'll call it.
i put the transmission back in the car and with it on jack stands not running the shifter was in first gear i moved to 2nd...3rd...4th and when i went to go back to first i couldnt. the shifter wont more left or right anymore but feels normal going into 3rd and 4th.
back out, split the case to find the pin that holds the shift mechanism inline is not in straight/all the way. looked over the transmission and everything seemed fine, played with the shift changer and seemed ok, so i put it all back together without EVER touching the shift changer once i was ready to put the case back on so it wouldnt pop out again.
back in, shifter still only does 3rd and 4th and never went into 1-2 or 5-r.
any ideas what i am doing wrong?
thanks, Doug

as your dropping the case wiggle the shifter side to side and the case should drop right down then open the locking spring on the top half of the case and push the case completely down put like a bolt on each corner of the case.. turn it over make sure the shaft spins and the gear selector should work like normal.. always does for me

so with the trans out of the car did you pit a screw driver through the hole in the shift rod and try to twist it does it move if not you have to take back apart.

i did, however, I'm inexperienced with transmissions and i didn't know what was happening when i moved it was normal or not. I would put a screwdriver in it and the rod would move back and forth but it wouldn't lock into anything. It would twist slightly and spring/return back to center. at ONE point, it was difficult, i was able to twist and push to lock in a gear selection. other than that, the rod didnt seem to want to twist AND push/pull. I didnt know if that was normal or not.
ok the twist is good. is the trans in the car or out?
if it is out once again try and twist to the left and pull does it move. it should only twist a little bit and pull out maybe a half inch that would be first gear keep it twisted and push it in and that is second gear if it does not do that it has to come back apart. when you took it apart in side what bolts did you take out there should have been 4 black bolts one gold one all 10mm did you take anything other then these out?

i bump it for more possible answers that way i'm not trying one things and waiting another few days for another answer. i can just try one thing after another if i have multiple ideas for whats going on.
i took everything out of the transmission and replaced it all with different components.

my original problem was a bad 4th gear synchro so i replaced my worn synchros with all carbon lined ones and i opted for the shorter type r gears while i had the tranny apart.
now every time i put the tranny together i cant shift through the gears.

then your putting something together wrong sorry. i have built at least 50 b-series trans. and i know if is is doing something like that there is nothing you can do without taking it back apart.
