car 'jumps' in reverse
I get a clunking noise and jumping-stop-jump-stop in the direction I'm going when I put my 'new' 1996 Acura Integra GSR in reverse and let out the clutch. I can avoid the clunking if I rev it up. The noise/movement is similar to the 'clunk' and 'jumping' you get if you try to take off in 3rd gear quickly without giving it gas, only this is in reverse when trying to drive normally.
It takes off fine in first gear, even without gas on a flat road.
Could this be a throw-out bearing beginning to fail? Is my rear gear damaged? Or is it normal to have to rev up (say 2k) a GSR in reverse?

You consider 2k to be reving up? You have a lot to learn my friend. Lol. I usually rev to about 2k on every take off. It is not abnormal to rev to 2k for a take off. Its pretty typical. Its hard to really diagnose your problem over the internet. I mean I can get my 98 gsr to clunk/shake/make interesting sounds, if I try to let the clutch out quickly in reverse with out giving it a lot of gas. I guess shuddering describes it best. I think I would roll with it for a week and let your self get used to your "new" teg. It is quite possible that you are not used to the car yet. It is also possible that you may have a problem. If something is going to break it will eventually. See if it gets worse over time or if you get used to it. It may be nothing other that you just wanting to baby it since its new. Ya know? As I said earlier, roll with it for a week and see if it gets worse. If it gets wore then you have a problem. There that sums up my paragraph of writing. Lol. Good luck with the teg. Is the clutch grabbing right off of the floor? Like as soon as you start to let it out it grabs and the car shudders.
I just went out and tested it again. I actually have to rev it up to 3500 in order to NOT get the 'jumping, jarring, shudder' in reverse. That's a bit high. I've had the car for 6 months and have been busy with more serious problems with it. Now I'm getting to these less serious, but considerable problems. No, it's not getting louder or going away.
Also, I'm NOT letting the clutch out QUICKLY in reverse. you misread my posting. I let it out normally, but no speed of letting it out seems to make a difference.
I'd rather not wait for something to break or I wouldn't have made this posting.
I've already adjusted the clutch properly, so that's not the problem. Besides, it only does it in reverse.
I've checked all the things you'd normally check: tranny fluid was good, but still changed it about 2k miles ago. still 'shudder'. All the tranny bolts are tight. All engine mounts are new. No cracks in the tranny case.
I've heard it could be a hot spot on the clutch from the previous teenager revving it up to much and doing burnouts.
Maybe it needs a new clutch/flywheel or the detent ***** or internal springs are worn? Anyone have this problem with theirs?

I have this problem in reverse and 1st gear. Drives me nuts, but I don't feel like doing anything about it yet. I think its my flywheel that I did not resurface after clutch replacement. I wouldn't worry about burning the clutch by revving it a bit higher as it would still have to be replaced eventually. Same amount of work, just feel like living with it till the Spring comes
Are you sure its not your brake "locking" ? :D - https://honda-tech.com/forums/showthread.php?p=43818827

Also, keep in mind that reverse is a taller gear than 1st, and will require more torque from the engine to get moving in.
My 00 GSR doesn't need any more than 1,200 RPM or so to get going in either 1st or reverse. If I really pay attention, I can get the car moving smoothly without the gas pedal at all on level ground.
Sounds like you guys that need to rev up higher either have a mechanical issue, or need to learn how to modulate the throttle and/or clutch better.
This can certainly cause it.

Well I have driven standard for a very long time and I don't think modulating the throttle and clutch is the problem. I have looked over the whole car for any mechanical issue and I cannot find one. In a previous experience with my hatch it had the same problem I put solid motor mounts in and it fixed the issue.

i think your problem is your tranny fluid, when did you change it? and how many miles were on the car? if you never changed it and have high mileage, then you probably shouldn't have changed it at all. the fluid carries a certain amount of metal "grit" that serves to provide friction for the gears to catch in your old fluid . If you change the fluid, you risk removing that grit and the gears will no longer catch and you may have to repair/replace your transmission. I would and have never replaced tranny fluid in any car, but thats just me.
