Icon6 Replace k24a1 with k24a4? Can it be done?

Well? Can it?
I have a 2003 CR-V 5 speed, and to make a long story short, my motor took a dump!
Head gasket is blown, so..
Even tho I can just go ahead and pull the head off, resurface and replace the H gasket, I want to build the stock k24a1, but I still want to drive the V around, so I'm thinking about buying another motor and dropping it in.
I've been searching around for a good, low millage motor to purchase, and i've noticed that the accord K24a4 is much, much cheaper than the Crv A1, so...
I'm thinking about picking up a A4 and using that for now while I build my A1.
Is there any major difference between both engines? I'm sure it can be done, or it's been done, but I want to know if anyone here has done it, and what to look forward to.
Yes, I could just purchase an A1, I know that, but if I can save myself a few hundred, then that's a few extra hundred that can go into the A1 build..
Any Input will be greatly apreciated! Thanks in advance!

Thanks.

im not that familiar w/ the k series motor...
but check the specs if the accord's engine could handle the weight
and the power needed by the crv, anyway base from what ive observed
they have the same platform, even in suspension parts....!!??
i know the crv's engine is a bit more torquey..?? -> check the link to verify,
like i said im not that familiar with the K swap but from my experience w/
the B series..we could interchange all B series engines its just that the power
issue concerning what car will you use it.. of course weve seen a lot of
civic w/ B20 on them but not a crv w/ b16..or b18, although one posted
before he did a gsr swap on his V...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_K_engine

**im sure itll bolt up, but your main concern will be the power, is it suitable
enough or would match up w/ the gear ratio of your crv's tranny...
again im not that familiar but HTH...
good luck!!

Thank you for your reply, and yes, power is of concern, but both engines have the same power/torque, I was just wondering about the sensors, if they would match up with the Crv harness etc etc.. Well, I went to an salvage yard and asked the person that runs that joint to please line up the accord engine and the Crv engine, he asked me if I was crazy, that he was not gonna do any of that unless I was gonna buy something!!
So I "LOL'ed" and told him that I was indeed crazy, and that I was indeed going to buy an engine from him, but I have to find out certain things before I did so.
I explained what my dilema was, and he asked me, "why not just get a Crv motor"? That's what you need right"? I said, yes, but if I figure this out right now, we both are going to open up new doors for ourselves and future customers!!
After explaining (again), he finnaly understood, and told me he had asked himself that question before but never had a chance or the need to find out, and load and behold, he
assigned one of his employees to assist me in my quest for answers..
We pulled several motors down from their storage racks, diferent years from both crv's and accords, and to make an already long story not so long!
Yes, they are interchangeble with one another, except for a few things to keep in mind:
if you Crv/Accord is drive by wire, then your replacement motor must also be drive by wire, or visa.. Or for example, if you are replacing a cable driven with a drive by wire engine, then you must swap over the intake manifold and throttle body from existing engine to the new replacement engine, besides all of that, it is a simple interchage..
Oh, and the engine harness too must be swaped just to keep things simple..
Anyway, there is the answer I was looking for.. And I earned myself a pal at a salvage yard..

yes good job on your research although I havent swapped an element I have done a few k swaps, The drive by wire and drive by cable, is one thing to really research also, research mounting bolts for the tranny's. Like I know that an accord tranny won't bolt up to lets say a rsx-s engine, they have different bolt location's on the tranny housing. Hasport and a few other company's have solved that particular issue, but just to be safe make sure you check that out, also if you really wanted too, you could go ahead and buy a k-pro since you are building your a1 block and ditch the drive by wire all together. Just a thought, IMO drive by wire sucks (no feeling tooooo blahhh). I kno money is an issue but you should look for a k24a2,hehe yum and that would be really sick in a element. I hope my post maybe helped lol good luck either way bro.

Yup, k-pro is in the works for my CRV, I'm just saving my pennies and selling a bunch of other stuff on a different forum just so I can begin building.
Yea, a k24a2 would be nice, but I think on the engine I'm gonna build, I'm just gonna go Vtec killer, run both k20a2 cams and all exhaust rockers, kpro, and I already have a race header for it too..
we will see how it goes, hopefully I will begin pulling the old motor out and dropping the new one in this weekend.. Wish me luck!

Greetings. I see this post is a few years old but I'm faced with the same decision: my 03 CRV K24a1 engine is toast and I can get a k24a4 for peanuts. Is it worth the trouble? Will the wiring harness and brackets all directly fit? Any sensor issues?

Thanks!
