Default What else to upgrade when replacing head gasket?!

So here's my situation:

I'm having hella overheating issues with my '96 GS-R, and since I'm turbo, looking to build the motor in a few years after I'm out of college and can afford, what can I go ahead and have done now while the head is off to prepare the motor for more boost?

I'm already planning on getting the basic thicker gasket to reduce compression and peak cylinder pressures, but what else? Won't the head have to come off anyway when they rebuild the motor with pistons/rods, sleeving the block, etc.?

I'd build the motor now to save a few bucks in the long run, but I just don't think I can afford the 3-4 g's to do the whole thing now.

Thanks,
Nick

I'm sorry, but I forgot to mention that the original repair is prolly going to be for a blown head gasket.......

Lowering the compression with a thicker gasket is good for now. A set of ARP head studs will help seal the gasket better. Have a machine shop make sure the head deck is level or have it resurfaced so you get a good seal.
