Default bought an odyssey with bad trans have questions

Today i bought a 2001 odyssey,125k and its nice. was advertised as having a bad trans. good thing it was only 2 miles away. I called the former owners mechanic(she had it in last week for misc maint, thought they were having belt noise..) and he said that the code that came up was torque converter. He said this was a $500 job. sounds good. It acts like it hits neutral when it shifts.. as a new owner, reading all these posts, whats the problem with these trans? What part is failing? Is it lack of oil? Can a newer trans fit and would last longer?
This guy cant see it until next week, so im gonna do the oil change and see what happens with the honda oil. (maybe it had something else in it)
He also said that she had a new trans put in at 80k(warranty?)
My local dealer quoted 3k for a new trans with 3 year 36k.
I have found a 2010 trans for 1100.00 will this fit?
Thanks guys

The d4 light is not coming on at all. Im hoping this is just a solenoid. Does anyone know a way of testing these?

'99 - '01 transmissions are internchangeable, the '02 - '04s are 5 speed automatics. The '99 - '01s failed due to a bearing failure (bearing flew apart and fragments plugged up passages and causes erratic shifting. '02 - '04s had problems with the 2nd and 3rd gear clutch packs. Most of these odysseys are on their 3rd or so transmission at this point. A lot of them failed at 80 - 120k.

The above info is correct. I had the same thing happen to my trans, I just took it in for a full rebuild. It cost me $1600. If you buy a trans from a junk yard, you will pay $1000+, and there is a chance that that trans will also fail quickly. I would just get it rebuilt and be done with it. I have 2 Odysseys, love them both, and had the trannies rebuilt in both. I tow a 5000lbs trailer almost on daily basis with my van, never had an issue since rebuilt. It's been 30000 miles.
