I've got 92 prelude with almost 300k km on it. I went for an oil change to my usual place but seems like it didn't go well this time.

During cold starts it now spits more dense smoke than usual and smoke has burning rubber smell (not super strong but easily noticeable). When car reaches normal temperature seems like everything becomes normal.

I think they either put synthetic there by mistake or some new type of oil with lower density, so when engine is cold it gets somewhere where it shouldn't through enlarged cracks due to low temperature.

I will go for a new oil change and will keep my fingers crossed that it is just an oil, not busted engine, but I was wondering maybe someone experienced something similar?

 

Just hope its not a blown headgasket. Did the brand of oil change?

 

maybe they used the wrong oil.

 

Find out what weight oil they used. Most likely you have been using 10w30 in the past, is that correct?

 

i had the same issue......i let my "old school" dad put 5w30 and it was acting all weird...i ran full synthetic royal purple 10w30 and all was good afterwards.....thatd b my first move....if it keeps up after the oil change...id start saving lol

 

I run 5w-30 and 10w-30 no problems, i doubt its going to affect it like the guy above ^ says.

change it yourself it takes 10 min and very basic tools

 

Those are both 30 weight oils and will perform the same at normal operating temperature. The only issues that may result from using the wrong one would occur during cold starts.

And yes, an oil change would not hurt for the OP.
