With a fully charged battery the car should run without the alternator.
However, if you can't get it started, you wouldn't know... try jumping it. If it dies as soon as you take off the juice, it's the alternator (which should be able to supply enough juice to keep the car running without the help of the battery). If it keeps running, but won't restart without a jump each time, it's most likely the battery (or you didn't let the battery charge enough).

try switching the distributor off a good car i did it on my car and it did the same thing battery was good alternator was good but my alternator had given sht try that if and let us know what happens
well i got a four year old batteryy, soo am thinking thattt. but if it is the battery then why did my car die while it was running??
my alternators newww. but it should at least start then die or somethingg like that.
is it possible my car could of skipped time cuz i just had my water pump and timing belt replaced like a month ago.
then again it could be something in the distributorr. am just trying to narrow it downn.

okay heres the story i put my battery in my friends car and it did the same thing as mine. then put his in mine and it wanted to start better but still didnt. so replacing the battery what else could it be, distributor, alternator because the car died on me while drving????
I had a similar situation(not regarding the battery though) where my car just died. Almost like it ran out of gas. The bearing in the distributor started to bind. It heated up so much that it melted the rotor and the rotor spun on its shaft. I was getting spark but it was all off time. I replaced the rotor and still no start. It ended up being the Ignition control unit, inside the distributor. I would get a good known distributor and see if that works, FIRST(if you can).
I sure would check the timing belt, sounds like the motor is struggling to turn over due to bad valve timing letting compression out. Head gasket could let water into a cylinder and hydrolic the motor, intake gasket has the ability to do the same not likely. I am a mind reader as well. So here I go. It is raining where you are, you have a cold air intake and you sucked up to much water, so says the rwdsohcef guy
