Default Temp. Gauge Issue

Very new to the whole honda thing. Just bought an 89 hatch dx with the 1.5l and a 5speed. So here's the problem, It has the instrument cluster with no tach, just speedo, temp, and fuel. Sometimes the Temp. gauge works and other times it doesn't move. Where do I start to look for the cause. At the cluster? the gauge? sending unit? Maybe this is a common problem and someone can give me better direction on where to start. Thanks

Unless the wiring has been tampered with, it's more likely a mechanical issue than an electrical one.

Does the temperature gauge issue repeat itself during any particular weather or driving condition? IE: Only on the freeway, only at a stop etc.

Not sure havent had it long enough to drive it in all conditions. just noticed that it doesnt move at all. I just got a lighting issue worked out so I'll be able to drive it more and see how it reacts at different times. I'll check connection at sending unit.
Thanks

Ok so I had some time today to run the car around. Drove about 10 miles up to my parents house temp gauge did not move. Went out to warm it up for about 10min. before I left this evening and gauge was about 1/4 of the way up. So I thought great its working again, drove about 2miles looked down and gauge was back to not functioning. If this is a sending unit going out could someone tell me where it is located? Or maybe someone knows something else.

Oh yeah this was just normal driving average about 40mph. Not excessive stopping and going.
