spun bearing. new block or rebuild?
oil drain plug came out. i was going 80 on the innerstate for about 10 min then car dies. this was quite a while ago. the head is fine and the block is at the shop. it spun a bearing, dont know which but pretty sure it was a main. is a rebuild worth it? its a d16 so maybe not. i guess i'd have to turn the crank, hone the cylinders, replace bearings. is it worth it?
you could probably get a whole engine for $500 and have all the extra parts you'll ever need. The crank may have been scrathched which would not be good.
Sorry man, that is the suck. If you got the capitol I think you should look into rebuilding it stronger than before, but if there's crank damage, I'd look into a replacement.
i'll have to go inspect it. its a d16 so i could get another for $200. i was thinking of building this one up but if it would cost more than 200 bucks i'd just get another one. need to find out how much bearings are and which are done for.
Well a build-up on your engine would cost more than $200, but it'd end up being far stronger than stock.
Check out http://www.importperformanceparts.net/ It's the import division of flatlander. their prices are great on most schtuff.

Most likely you spun a rod bearing, it probabally damaged your crank and 1 or more rods. You can either turn your crank and get oversized bearings, or you can use an A6, Z6, or Y8 crankshaft. If a rod(s) was damaged, you can use rods from any D16 motor, including ZCs.
Bearings for D-series motors are cheap, just a little over $1/half. The only bearings you should use are OEM or ACLs.

You'd better check the cam journals- 10 minutes with no oil pressure= galled cam journals= junk head. Crank is probably damaged too- get a new engine.

timonx, thanks for the link. they have cheap parts.
00civicvtec, you mean ~$150 for new bearings?
the head is all ok. the cam is in good condition. need to check out block to see what damage was done, rebuild may just a little more than another block. how long does it take to change pistons and rods? i was gonna build up the messed up one for n/a but maybe it would be more efficient to just pull the one in the car and add upgrades to it. how would i determine the size bearings i would need with a turned crank? thans for the imput.

I don't recommend turning a Honda crank, just get another one if it's damaged, it will cost you less for a used one than to get your old one turned anyway....
OEM bearings + thrust washers = $30 or so
ACL bearings + thrust washers = $103 from hondasaver
My advice is to get some ACL bearings because OEM d-series bearings are complete junk, and if you get a new crank get a D16a6 crank because it has the best oiling over z6/y8 cranks.
I'm personally using an A6 crank and ACL bearings in my D16.

ok. my brother has a wrecked zc engine. it sent a rod through the cylinder wall. he has 3 good pistons i can use, and a crank. just have to find another pison. should i get new piston rings? would there be a break in period as with many rebuilds? the whole change oil after 1000 miles and dont take it above 4000 rmp for so long and then gradually take it up type of thing?
Yes you should definately change the rings, and probably the bearings depending on the miles on that block. Yes you should break it in gently.
Probably also from hondasaver. Good fellas.
http://www.importperformanceparts.net/ also has them for $29/$9=$38 total.

h-parts.com is where I have gotten all my OEM parts, they are by far the cheapest place to buy from.
As far as using a ZC crank in your motor, it will not work. The ZC/A1 cranks won't work in SOHC D16 motors, pick up a a6/z6/y7/y8 crank, and you will be fine.

i thought zc was the same as a d16a1. the engine code for zc is d16a8/a9. this should work. let me know if i am misinformed. the dealership in town quoted me $115 for bearings! they must have 60% markup or something.
