I swapped my obd2 d16y8 for a obd1 d16z6 and now it will not start. I believe it to be because the new engine does not have a knock sensor. I would like to know if there is a way around this or what I can do to get my car to run properly. Can I run a obd1 ecu with a jumper harness? Even if so is there another way to get around this sensor?
Thanks!
Thanks!
You will have to run an OBD1 ECU with a jumper harness as the Z6 doesnt even have a space for a knock sensor. The car will start and run without a knock sensor so you can rule that out as the issue. Do you have fuel and spark?

Yeah I have fuel. I am going to do another spark test tonight. I did before I tried starting it last night.
Only Y8's need the knock sensor. Z6's don't come with the hole nor the ECU that looks for it. Get the right ECU.
Also, missing a knock sensor does not inhibit the car from starting.

I can provide actual experience with that...my knock sensor is out on my y8 right now and it runs decent.
Get a p28 ecu.
Do you have any mods...intake..header...anything?

There's no reason that the y8's (p2t? p2p?) ECU won't get the car started and get the car running fine. IIRC, when I did a similar swap on a friend's car, we found a hole for the knock sensor.
With a p28, the car wont pass emissions. If thats not important...then yes a p28 is the simplest way to run the car.
If you do need emissions, then youll also have to do the ckf trick....or even more stuff depending on where u live.
None of that explains why the car wont start, however.
What distributor did u use? The z6 distributor might plug in, but will need slight re wiring.
Are all your grounds present? Check the one on the thermostat housing.
What does it do when u try to start it?
What year/model is the car?

He is running a d16z6.......a P28 is the ecu for that specific engine.........how the hell is that not the route he should take?
I didn't read the other posts but correct me if Im wrong d16y8 and obdII motors have crank fluctation sensor and if your running the y8 ecu with the z6 (which doest have it) the y8 is gonna look for it and if don't have it it ain't gonna start. So get a jumper and the correct p28 ecu. Gl
Haha I was like I know SpecialBrownie has a good knowledge base and has to know this.
In all honesty I know nothing about emissions...I've lived in Fl for my whole driving life and haven't had to deal with it...so yeah...if emissions is no issue...p28...if it is...best of luck with that.

Sorry I haven't responded, life got busy.
Anyhow.. I have realized that the ECU in my car is a 37820-p28-a03 which has me completely confused as it is a 1996 del Sol.. I have found that I have a blown head gasket and I can't find a dizzy that will work (guess mines broken?). It is a d16z6 block with a d16y8 head. I am trying to use a y8 dizzy as the z6 dizzy has a different bolt pattern. I borrowed what I believed to be a y8 dizzy and got the car started. It was awful lol.. Timing terrible and the head gasket definitely blown (white smoke, antifreeze smell, over heating and the oil now looks like greenish brown milk) so.. the distributor was the reason it WASN'T starting.
If anyone can help with the ECU issue I would appreciate it. I didn't think they made obd2 p28's? Do I need a jumper and an obd1 p28? Or if you have a y8 dizzy you don't want I can't find one around here... Once I figure out all the other stuff I will figure out the knock sensor issue.
TwoFaced: I'll PM you when I figure everything out to see if you still need it.
