88 HF + LS/VTEC = FUBAR!!!!
Ok, so where do i start... well i got the swap from a friend of mine, ls bottom end, b16 pistons, port and polished gsr head. He was running E85 tuned with hondata no problems. Motor ran fine in his EF, took it out and dropped it into my 88crx. Well heres where the problems started, has a rough time starting and will not rev past 3300-3400 rpm. Check engine light reads a code 4 (crank position sensor). Checked our distributor wiring and everything is correct. Read a thread about the same problem and they switched 2 wires, tried that still no worky! Uggghhh, frustrated. Used a p28 with s300 tuned for gsr with cams, then used the p28 with s300 tuned for the motor with e85... same problem. Someone please enlighten me!
your timing could be off. did you replace timing belt? that could be a problem or an old timing belt, or bad tensioner could have caused the timing belt to skip a tooth. happened to me. good luck
I dont think its timing, literally came out of the EF (running perfect) and into the CRX. Sounds like it hits a 2 step, really only way to explain the issue. Drives fine up to 3300 rpm and then hits a "2 step". You dont have to use the clutch to start it, dont know if that would cause a problem, didnt in my b18c eg.
Hondata owner said the clutch switch, like stated we used 2 different ecu's and both acted the same. Its is bogging a little up to the 3300 not too bad, assumed it was because of the e85 tune. looked under dash for a clutch switch of something of that nature. Is it a switch, wiring? First crx.
Waiting on my phearable ecu to come in, takin a little longer than expected... cough cough... lol. Basemap ordered to spec, no 2 step so that should eliminate the ecu suspect. Using a obd0-obd1 jumper harness, checked the wiring pinout for dizzy and everything is correct. Lost, dazed and confused!

Now were staring to get somewhere, had a dizzy off of a fresh b16 from HMO tried that still the same problem. Will deff re-check my wiring again, and again, and again! lol, if everything checks out ill check into the crank sensor. Appreciate the help guys, ill let you know.
the 88s didnt require you to push in your clutch to start the car. They put it in later years for safety. It's just a switch in the clutch pedal that completes the circuit. I don't think it has anything to do with your engine.
