Default Civic VX the Toyota Prius MPG killer!

Car is currently for sale: Only reason I'm selling is I bought a honda insight.

Update 12/2/11 I'm only tracking mileage on Fuelly now here is link:

After months of searching I finally found a white Civic VX that has not been abuse by a teen! It's far from perfect but its nearly a 100% clean slate, minus an intake and, sony radio. (I'll fix them though)

My goal is to get this VX to surpass the EPA rating of 47/56 MPG and totally crush the Prius MPG 48/51, with NO aftermarket parts (consumable items excluded) Hoping for 60+ MPG we shall see though. I understand most people here are going for performance but I'm going to try for efficiency on this build. Wonder if I'll get any love?

Master Fixed/Changed list: linked pages with pictures:

1) Intermittent Starting problem: Fixed 10/16/10 Starter replaced $120 Page 2 Starter fixed, OEM intake installed
2) OEM intake box added with K&N Drop in filter $40 11/20/10
3) OEM third brake light was shot out (first pic), has been replaced. $15 11/20/10
4) page 3. Transmission replaced 2/17/11 Thanks to synchrotech-transmissions.com $$$.
5) Upper and lower ball joints replacement. $100
6) Front wheel bearing replacement $40+$50 install 3/05/11.
7) Installed air damn and fixed Intermittent Passenger side head light $10 6/20/11
8) Installed clock $20 7/18/11
9) Blue OEM car mats $30 7/18/11

Current Issues:
Speedometer indicator is off
Front drivers seat has rip
Glove box hinges on bottom are broken, stays up but sits lower.
Car's body has many dents and dings,

Un-Washed as received 10/06/10

interesting, I don't doubt you'll surpass the EPA ratings. How much did you pick it up for?

This is a clean title (miles documented on the carfax every year!!!) FEDERAL edition! It has, 5 wire o2, green shift light, and federal CPU!! I'm not sure how it ended up in NorCa all its life being federal edition. (if you know anything about CA VX edition it got ROBBED! because of no lean burn for emissions purposes) Just glad it did NOT come from a rusty state thank baby jebbies!

I paid xxxx

Quite a few of the pannels are damaged so I will be looking into this option. Maybe in the market for used parts with peeling clear coats, as I'll just paint OEM white.

No gut, I would like the car to remain functional. + keeping it as OEM looking as possible will hopefully keep the target off of my gas miser.

Great build thread. I'm definitely in for what you can do. It's a cool concept, I'm sure you'll do well with it too.

I got it from butter99 brother, but his brother isn't on HT (and limited internet access) so it was a long process of talking on the phone and going to go look at it he lived in the sticks, that's why its so dirty.

It's a cool idea but I think I'm going to stick with the D15Z1 it came with.

I think this is a car that could have gone either way to someone that wanted to do a swap or repair all the little stuff that is wrong with it. I do have free time so I thought it would be a good project + I couldn't find one that was un-abused in OEM condition.

I washed the car yesterday and it came out pretty clean. The engine bay is what is starting to give me a head ache so far. If anyone has a idea for cleaning HEAVY HEAVY CV grease spread all over the engine bay please do tell. I've used purple power and it did cut alot of the grease but its going to take scrubbing to rid the engine of its problem. My idea is to buy a big liquid dawn and scrub brush and go to town. Any thoughts? I also noticed that after a powerful rinse of the bay the alternator got a little water in it and starting a very light hiss, and looked to be turning the water into steam, I'm hoping that's normal? I'll take the battery out next time I wash it down.

Nice Vx. I remember the days of 50+ MPG. Just had to have a B16 tho...

On another note, replace the OEM tiny intake box and arms. I put a cai on mine before the swap and lost mpg. Another thing you can do is re-route the opening for the intake to somewhere around the exhaust mani. Hotter air = less dense air = less fuel.

In the future, you can also replace the tires with smaller ones, which are marginally lighter and have lower rolling resistance.

I've poked around a website called gassavers.org . Might be another place to look as well.

Mine had a bad dizzy that caused this. The distributor was $400 (I didn't shop around either) which prompted the motor swap.

Thanks for the info, I'll check it out for sure. I plan on putting the "tiny intake" back on.

As far as the dizzy is concerned I don't think that is problem but I'll keep it in mind. $400 seems crazy high I see them go for around $100-$150, maybe because I'm not buying from the stealer-ship?
