Re: Civic VX the Toyota Prius MPG killer!
Yeah i was going to ask if you were planning on doing mods like, warm air, intake grille block, mpguino/ instrumentaion, higher tire pressure, hypermiling techniques?
This car would be a monster, and i would def recommend looking at the aerocivic site, good luck

good find. I am doing a VX swap into my LX sedan lol... sounds like some of your problems I have as well... I think the intermittent starting problem could be my clutch switch... speedometer could be a bad connection between the ecu and my instruments...
also the mpguino sounds like a cool idea if you are into DIY electronics projects

Nice build bro, I agree with Aaron0526 on a different build. Have fun and enjoy the little bit of gas you will use while building this car.

Re: Civic VX the Toyota Prius MPG killer!
nice! I've got a VX, bought it bone stock from a lawyer in Tulsa, OK who used it for his 55mi daily commute from the fields (aka sticks) of whereever to downtown tulsa... picked it up for $1300 with 107K mi he was the 1st owner hence me being 2nd, not a dent on any panel, mint interior... it was sweet when I got it, lol (even sweeter now)
but hooked just a vafc up to it when I was DD it and got it to 52mpg pretty nice...
but now it's got a full cage, and on its way to SFWD stardom... hopefully...

Re: Civic VX the Toyota Prius MPG killer!
I picked my VX up for $300. Needed a trans/clutch and a couple of other minor things. Had the trans, Clutch was $125, put new wheel bearings in the front and all new front brakes.
49MPG avg.
42MPG is the least i have gotten (warming up every day in winter)
54.7mpg is the best, but i had my 30gal air compressor and 4-500# tool box with me. Removed the passenger seat for the compressor and filled the hatch with tool box.
60+MPG...... It is VERY doable!!!

Re: Civic VX the Toyota Prius MPG killer!
Just get new tires, 50psi air pressure, Replace all of the fiction parts (ie..pads, rotors, drums, shoes, wheel bearings) Get an alignment.... Everything you do to one of these will help out.
Good luck

Re: Civic VX the Toyota Prius MPG killer!
Picked up my 96 hx in feb 2008, 208,000miles for 2000. Now at 261,000, dented on drivers, new hoses and headgasket, doing 38+ burning oil, best was 43mpg. I bought a d16y8 I have set to the side for a rebuild in jan.

Re: Civic VX the Toyota Prius MPG killer!
Why would you use a D16Y8 instead of just repairing the D16Y5 you already have? You'll lose the lean-burn and will see a serious mileage drop by going with the Y8, not to mention you also losing low end torque which the Y8 doesn't have. The Y8 torque at low RPM is about the same as the Y7 b/c the cam profile in 4 valve mode (non vtec) matches that of the Y7 while the Y5 has a cam profile in non vtec mode that is very suitable at low RPM with the VTEC cam profile that is better than Y7 but worse than Y8. Honda later figured out they could get the best of the Y8 and the best of the Y5 and so the D17A2 does just that, though it doesn't have lean-burn.
